Job 17:3

Lay down now, put me in a surety with thee; who is he that will strike hands with me?

Job 17:3 falls within the extended debate between Job and his three friends about his afflictions, which occupies Job 4–31. It belongs to Job's struggle to understand his suffering while maintaining his integrity. It is his appeal for God to guarantee his case and act as his surety, asking who else will pledge himself on his behalf since no human companion will take responsibility for him.

It is cited as evidence that the breath of life is literal air and life, not a deathless part of God within a person.
