Job 18:7

The steps of his strength shall be straitened, and his own counsel shall cast him down.

The verse stands in the extended debate between Job and his three friends on the subject of his afflictions, covering chapters 4 to 31. That debate is formed by three circles of speeches from each speaker. It belongs to the arguments of Job's friends, whose statements came from their own wisdom and observation. Their general claim that evil is ultimately punished was true. They wrongly applied it to Job's suffering, for his affliction did not prove that he was under God's displeasure.
