He hath destroyed me on every side, and I am gone: and mine hope hath he removed like a tree.
The verse gives voice to the depth of Job's suffering, in which he feels ruined on every side and his hope torn up by the roots like a tree. It is his cry of anguish when he seems forsaken by heaven and earth. That forsaking takes shape in friends turned against him while God's hand lies heavy upon him.
Even in that despair he holds fast to his faith in God and to his consciousness of integrity. His despair stands side by side with his assurance that his living Redeemer will stand upon the earth. It stands likewise with his assurance that after his body is destroyed he will see God for himself.
