Job 19:17

My breath is strange to my wife, though I intreated for the children’s sake of mine own body.

The verse stands within Job's lament over appearing to be abandoned by those nearest to him. Around it are failing relatives, familiar friends who forgot him, and loved ones who turned against him. His reference to his wife and children belongs to that same widening circle of estrangement. Their alienation makes the forsakenness domestic and personal, not merely social.
