Job Kneels in Trust Beneath Breaking Lightby emmanuel_higgins

Job 19:25

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth:

For I know that my Redeemer lives and will stand upon the earth at the last is personal certainty in a living Redeemer and His appearing at the latter day. Though the body is destroyed, in the flesh the redeemed will see God for themselves with their own eyes, face to face and not as a stranger, in bodily resurrection. This hope looks to Christ coming in glory as the Deliverer in whom redemption is completed. The living Redeemer ever lives to intercede for all who trust Him, sustaining them under conviction, persecution, affliction and heavy duties, and surrounding the suffering with light, comfort and love as a wall of fire. Because He lives they will live also, with hope of eternal life that calls for faith, repentance and a changed character, and gives perfect peace, courage and power to conquer every difficulty, sorrow and dark future by simply trusting the heavenly Father when the way cannot be seen.

Job's Hope Beyond Death

The verse is personal certainty that the Redeemer is alive and will stand upon the earth at the latter day, at the last. It is the rejoicing testimony of a believer facing lingering illness, weakness, suffering, and death, whose faith has ripened into abiding trust that sustains him and makes him ready to rest from labors with hope beyond the grave. It is applied as hope that those who seek to carry out God's will on earth now will stand with Him at the latter day.

Though the body is destroyed, Job will in his own flesh see God for himself with his own eyes, face to face and not as a stranger, and not another. This teaches bodily resurrection and personal sight of God, faith in saving power and in a personal future hope beyond death. The declaration rises from the depths of discouragement and despondency to the heights of implicit trust in mercy and saving power. Though weary of life and desiring death, Job was not allowed to die, and the possibilities of the future were opened to him in a message of hope.

That triumphant confession of a living Redeemer and of bodily resurrection to see God is given to sustain faith in affliction and darkness until sorrow is forgotten and steadfastness, security, and abundant blessing are restored. The verse points to Christ's coming in glory as the fulfillment of the hope of redemption. It presents the coming Deliverer as the fulfillment of the faithful people's hope and connects His appearing with the completion of redemption.

The same Jesus who ascended into heaven will come again in like manner very soon. The now-scattered sheep will be gathered to good pasture, and the blood-washed throng will be met in the city of God to march through the gates bearing palms of victory, wearing crowns of glory, and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb. The Redeemer is Jesus who gave His life, giving longing to see Him to express the gratitude of the soul to Him and magnify His name with every reason. The verse means confident faith in a living Redeemer and in a personal meeting with Him even without prior evidence or personal experience that the great things promised will be done, answering those who say they must have evidence before they can believe.

Living Redeemer Intercedes Now

The Redeemer is alive now and ever lives to make intercession before the Father for each individual who trusts Him and remembers that He gave His life for them. That living intercession sustains believers under conviction of sin, persecution, affliction, and burdensome duties. It is a refuge in severe suffering and pain, surrounding the afflicted as a wall of fire and giving light to the heart, comfort, and increased love to Jesus and the heavenly Father. Remembering this brings comfort when the heart shrinks from a difficult trial.

Because the Redeemer lives, the one who holds to Him will live also, and His life guarantees life to the believer. This is hope of living and of eternal life, and it is reason to prepare for eternal life through faith, repentance, and a changed character. It sustains faith amid weakness and discouragement. The living Saviour is one who can forgive transgressions.

To know that the Redeemer lives is to know that Jesus loves, that He is by the side of the tempted, that He waits to restore His moral image in those in God's service, and that He makes a way of escape from indulging appetite, forgetting belonging to God, and the snares of the enemy. This knowledge is reached by looking to Jesus instead of the discouraging features of religious experience, and by seeking for a new heart without resting until it is found. It involves acknowledging every ray of light given in His love and mercy and refusing to stay under condemnation because of past mistakes.

It is the privilege of the believer in felt weakness to take hold of divinity and lay hold on the strong arm of Jehovah, holding faith strong against trials and discouragement without defeat. Keeping eternal realities in view and habitually cultivating the thought and presence of God makes this confession the language of the soul, solemnizing the mind and making the soul glad. That truth carries the sense of God's presence, and when physicians cultivate that presence and truly believe and show it, their words in the sickroom impress patients with truth and exert power for good.

Confident Faith in Trial

For I know that my Redeemer liveth is the rejoicing testimony of a believer facing lingering illness, weakness, suffering, and death, whose faith has ripened into abiding trust in God that sustains him and makes him ready to rest from labors with hope beyond the grave. Its confession accompanies trust in God through discouragement, suffering, and apparent forsakenness. Its hope and courage are essential to perfect service for God and are the fruit of faith, overcoming despondency as sinful and unreasonable. God is able and willing more abundantly to bestow upon His servants the strength they need for test and trial, and though the plans of enemies may seem well laid and firmly established, He can overthrow the strongest of them in His own time and way when the faith of His servants has been sufficiently tested.

The confession comes from sanctified powers, a heart in harmony with the Holy Spirit, and a strong wrestling hold upon God, and it means standing with Him at the latter day because of seeking to carry out His will on earth now. After surrendering to Jesus a person can say this with a grateful heart, and faith in Jesus then strengthens each purpose and makes the character consistent. Knowing the Redeemer lives must be by actual personal experience, not by merely supposing oneself to be a Christian. This living knowledge comes when His love and grace brighten the character into higher, holier perfection and give glorious triumph amid the buffeting of Satan and the sorrows and trials of life, while those who exhaust strength for earthly benefit and worldly treasure and leave only a lame, sickly, inefficient sacrifice for God lack this experience and are left with doubts and darkness, no real happiness, and no deep exercises of mind in the things of God.

The verse gives perfect peace amid sadness and depression over deficient experience and longing for a deeper work, bringing the sense of being covered and shut in with Christ and clearness of mind for work. It is a joyful personal confession that Jesus is precious and near and gives perfect peace of mind, going with holding the work and the truth to be shared as more precious than ever. This knowledge is gained through the refreshing presence and subduing Spirit of the Lord that melts the heart into tenderness, gives liberty, satisfies the hungry soul with blessing, and follows wholehearted giving of self to the Lord in light of the present position of God's people, with liberty in speaking about that position. The firm personal assurance that His life guarantees life comes through bearing the cross of Christ, which lifts a person from the lowlands of earth into sweet communion with God.

Knowing the Redeemer lives gives power to meet and conquer every difficulty, sorrow, dark future, and impending trouble. It means putting the hand in the heavenly Father's hand and simply trusting and waiting when the way cannot be seen clearly and neither sight nor memory nor experience can guide, for the Father as a heavenly Father knows the way and will lead safely and will not let the trusting one stumble or slide, expressing perfect faith, perfect confidence, and unwavering trust that honors God. Confidence in the living Redeemer holds as an anchor cast within the veil for a heart surrendered to wise discipline that trusts every working of providence instead of murmuring and complaining against its only source of strength when plans fail and temptation comes to discourage. It holds in sickness and becomes the testimony borne in the last closing scenes of life when the lips are becoming palsied with death, the battle cry of the faithful warrior.

Personal knowledge that the Redeemer lives gives courage and hope to one sick and dying and going down into the grave hopeless when ministers give no courage and their prayers seem to reach no higher than the head, and leads to giving oneself wholly to Him on first hearing this truth. It is the language of firm faith and unswerving, active trust that lays hold on God and receives the Holy Spirit, showing the peace and confidence when the Saviour's joy fills the heart. It honors God with a cheerful disposition instead of a fretful, unhappy spirit, revealing what true religion does and proving God's people a joyful people full of faith and of the Holy Spirit. This assurance is a shield against the enemy that gives strength and confidence, lifts the soul above fear, keeps life in the atmosphere of heaven rather than the malaria of the world, brings the soul out of the darkened cellar into upper chambers open toward heaven catching the beams of the Sun of Righteousness, and makes sunshiny Christians who represent Jesus Christ.
