Job 19:8

He hath fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he hath set darkness in my paths.

Job's words voice his sense that God has fenced up his way so that he cannot pass and has set darkness in his paths. They are part of his account of suffering, expressing anguish and perplexity under the experience of feeling blocked on every way forward. Though he feels forsaken and cries out without receiving help or justice, he still holds fast to his faith in God and to his integrity. This distress forms the setting for his confidence that his Redeemer lives and that he will see God.
