Job Sits in Ashes as the Whirlwind Descendsby emmanuel_higgins

Job 2:12

And when they lifted up their eyes afar off, and knew him not, they lifted up their voice, and wept; and they rent every one his mantle, and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.

When his friends lifted their eyes from a distance and did not recognize him, their weeping, rending of mantles, and sprinkling of dust revealed that they could not grasp the depth of humiliation and suffering that had come upon him. Their outward display of grief was the measure of their inward inability to comprehend what he was enduring. The scene of distant beholding followed by lamentation marks Job as one whose affliction passed beyond the understanding of even his closest sympathizers.

That failure to understand Job foreshadows the failure of Jesus’ own brothers to understand His lowly life and trials. As Job’s friends stood before unexplainable abasement, so Christ’s brothers stood before a life of lowliness they could not interpret. The incomprehension surrounding Job’s suffering thus points forward to the incomprehension surrounding Christ’s humiliation among His own kin.
