Job 2:3

And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? and still he holdeth fast his integrity, although thou movedst me against him, to destroy him without cause.

Job is set forth as upright in character, reverent toward God in fear, and resolute in turning away from evil. Even after affliction came upon him and what he possessed was taken away through Satan's assault, he is declared to have held fast to his integrity and to have held fast to God. His suffering did not spring from a sinful course of life. His friends misread that suffering as evidence that punishment was deserved, and by their accusations they both put him to a further test and gave a false representation of God.

Integrity here means abiding faithfulness to God and clinging to what is right even while suffering and even when wrongfully treated. It is a possession to be preserved and guarded, not yielded up to Satan's striving to wrest it away. Job remained loyal under this trial, and God rewarded that loyalty. Those who meet opposition or discouragement are therefore to lay hold upon Christ and keep their integrity through trial.
