Job Sitting in Ashes Covered with BoilsBible World

Job 2:9

Then said his wife unto him, Dost thou still retain thine integrity? curse God, and die.

The verse belongs to Job's severe ordeal when he was stripped of earthly possessions, bereaved of his children, afflicted in body, and rejected and made an object of loathing to relatives and friends. That suffering was allowed by God for Satan to bring upon him even though it did not result from a sinful course of life. In the midst of that suffering his wife urged him to abandon his integrity by cursing God and accepting death. Her appeal to curse God and die expresses the distrustful and blasphemous sentiment that Satan presses on people under trial in order to lead them to repeat it.

Despite that pressure and rejection, Job preserved his integrity and remained loyal and faithful to God under the test. His suffering did not mean God had forsaken him, for in God's time God rewarded him by lifting him up and showing him greater favor than before.

The verse warns readers under trial not to yield to that distrust but to answer the pressure by speaking in faith and hope and trusting God. It calls sufferers to reject Satan's appeal to curse God and die because Christ has purchased their life and they belong to him.
