Job 20:18

That which he laboured for shall he restore, and shall not swallow it down: according to his substance shall the restitution be, and he shall not rejoice therein.

The verse belongs to Zophar's second speech declaring the portion of the wicked. It stands within the closing discussion between Job and his three friends. In that exchange the friends condemned Job because of his seeming self-righteousness, while he had no use for their words because he felt they were condemning him unjustly.

It means the wicked must give back what he worked to gain, without swallowing it down or enjoying it, with the restitution measured according to his substance. It belongs to the generally true principle that evil is ultimately punished and good rewarded, which was misapplied to Job and does not prove that his suffering showed God's displeasure. Statements by Job's friends about God and Job are not to be treated as reliable when they conflict with inspired teaching, but must be compared with other parts of the Bible.
