Job 20:23

When he is about to fill his belly, God shall cast the fury of his wrath upon him, and shall rain it upon him while he is eating.

Job 20:23 belongs to Zophar's second speech declaring the portion of the wicked. It stands within the closing discussion between Job and his three friends. It describes the punishment of the wicked person, that just as he is about to satisfy his appetite God's wrath falls upon him even while he is eating.

It expresses the truth that evil is ultimately punished. Job's friends misapplied that truth when they treated his suffering as proof that he was wicked or under God's displeasure. In that discussion the friends condemned Job because of his seeming self-righteousness, and he had no use for their words because he felt they condemned him unjustly. As part of the friends' speeches, the chapter cannot be treated as reliable teaching about God or Job where it contradicts inspired Scripture, but its claims must be tested against the rest of the Bible.
