Job 21:2

Hear diligently my speech, and let this be your consolations.

The verse stands in Job's answer within the long exchanges of chapters 3-31 between Job and his three friends on the cause and object of human suffering. In it Job appeals to his friends to listen diligently to his speech and to let that careful hearing serve as the consolations they owe him. The setting reflects human wisdom and observation attempting to explain affliction, with Job holding fast to his integrity while unable to understand God's dealings with him, yet not charging God foolishly. In this answer he teaches that the wicked prosper in this present life and that their punishment is future. Behind the trial God saw the end from the beginning and was working through it for what would glorify Himself, give comfort and hope to thousands of suffering ones afterward, and prove a blessing to Job.
