Job 22:11

Or darkness, that thou canst not see; and abundance of waters cover thee.

Job 22:11 belongs to the extended arguments or colloquies between Job and his three friends in chapters 3-31 on the cause and object of human suffering. Within that discussion it is part of Eliphaz's third speech accusing Job. It stands in the section spanning chapters 22 to 24, where Job answers with confidence in God's mercy and with teaching on the end of the wicked.

As a word from Job's friends it expresses what is generally true but is misapplied to Job's case, arising from their own wisdom and observation, since they had never known a thoroughly good man to be so afflicted. The accusations it belongs to are not reliable statements about Job and should not be treated as factual. Job himself judged to some extent from the same standpoint, yet knowing his own integrity he could not understand God's dealings with him, though he did not charge God foolishly. God saw the end from the beginning and was working out through Job's experience what would glorify Himself forever after, bringing comfort and hope to thousands of sufferers and proving a blessing to Job.
