Job 22:14

Thick clouds are a covering to him, that he seeth not; and he walketh in the circuit of heaven.

This verse belongs to Eliphaz's third speech, in which Job is accused. It records Eliphaz's claim that thick clouds cover God so that He does not see as He walks about the circuit of heaven. It is part of his argument concerning Job's suffering.

Statements about God in this chapter are not to be treated as reliable merely because they appear in the Bible, but must be tested against other inspired declarations. The friends' statements about suffering were generally true in principle but were wrongly applied to Job.

God's glory in heaven is veiled in darkness because sin has spread through the universe. God walks through the circuit of heaven and is the primary cause of uncommon darkness. He stretches out heaven like a curtain, makes the clouds His chariot, and walks upon the wings of the wind, and at His voice the stormy winds obey. He commands earthly vapors to be collected and condensed together so that with them He darkens both day and night. Such darkness is a token of His indignation against the crying iniquities and abominations of the people and an omen of future destruction.
