Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee.
To become acquainted with God is to truly know Him Himself and live in ongoing communion and companionship with Him, and this brings peace and good for the present life and for eternity. This knowledge comes through what He has revealed of Himself, by studying His word, laying up His words in the heart, receiving His law, and seeing Him revealed through Christ. It means seeking Him for who He is and not merely for His blessings, and those who yield to the Spirit's drawing to seek Him will find Him. Such acquaintance corrects Satan's work from the beginning to make people forget God and misrepresent Him as arbitrary, severe, and unforgiving, to be feared and shunned. Communion with God is the highest education and God's own method of human development, first used with sinless Adam in Eden, with immeasurable effect upon body, mind, and soul, giving assurance in prayer, light and cheer in trial and despondency, and power to endure as Christ endured.
Knowing God Himself
Acquaintance with Him means truly knowing God, keeping Him in mind, and living in peace and communion and companionship with Him. Becoming acquainted means seeking God Himself, not merely seeking His blessings, and those who seek Him will find Him. The desire to come to God is the drawing of His Spirit, and yielding to that drawing leads toward Him, while God gives the heart to know that He is the Lord.
Knowing the Holy is understanding. This knowledge comes through what God has revealed of Himself, through the revelations He has given, by studying His self-revelation and learning divine truth in His word. It is revealed through Christ. It includes receiving the law from His mouth and laying up His words in the heart.
From the beginning Satan has worked to make people forget God. He has misrepresented His character as arbitrary and severe and unforgiving, to be feared and shunned and hated. His purpose is to blot out the divine image, to impress his own likeness, and to hold people captive to his will. Truly becoming acquainted with God corrects that false conception.
Highest Education for Humanity
Acquaintance means knowing God and living in peace and communion with Him. That communion is God's own method for developing humanity. It is the highest education. It is the source of true knowledge and real development, opening the way to peace and good.
The same acquaintance was the means by which Adam was instructed in Eden. He received it while still sinless. Its effect reaches body, mind, and soul. That effect is immeasurable and beyond measure.
Peace and Good Received
Acquaintance with God and true knowledge of Him bring peace, and by that peace good comes to the one who knows Him. That peace and good are essential to present and eternal welfare, and they belong to a life of faith and godliness. To live in peace with Him is to enter the good He has promised to those who know Him.
When this acquaintance is formed, God Himself becomes the believer's treasure and delight. He hears prayer and establishes the thing that is asked. When the believer is cast down, He gives light and hope, and He saves the humble.
Knowing God through prayer gives assurance that He hears. That assurance strengthens the heart and brings cheerfulness in tribulation. By God's quickening power it lifts the heart above despondency. This acquaintance with God and with the truth enables a person to endure trial even as Christ endured.
