Job 23:12
Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food. Neither have I gone back from the commandment of his lips; I have esteemed the words of his mouth more than my necessary food.
To esteem the words from the divine mouth above necessary physical food and to hold fast to the commandments of the divine lips in unbroken union is the meaning of the verse. By that same comparison of food to spiritual need, the joys of salvation are more necessary than food and drink. The image shows that communion with God and the assurance of acceptance are essential to spiritual life.
Living this esteeming is learning daily at the feet of Jesus, keeping the glory of God supreme instead of self, and constantly beholding Him as the way, the truth, and the life. As He is thus beheld His brightness enters the life, so that His image is reflected without effort to shine. That reflected brightness appears in elevated thought and sanctified intelligence. It appears also in words and works that testify to union with Christ. Those words and works lead others nearer to the Saviour.
