Job 23:2

Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning.

The verse stands in the middle of Job's last reply to his friends in Job 8-27, within Job 22-24, after his friends have ceased their constant accusations, both open and implied. Even to that day his complaint continues bitter. His stroke or suffering is heavier than his groaning, greater than the words by which he can express it. His complaint is rebellious.

His friends counted his bitter protest as rebellion against God. Overwhelmed by great and intense suffering, he was protesting their false portrayal of God as punishing him for hidden sins. He knew his afflictions were not punishment for hidden sin, yet they treated his protest against that portrayal as rebellion against God.
