Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
Job goes forward and backward, searching for God in every direction, yet he cannot find Him or perceive Him. The cry expresses the anguish of one who feels abandoned under severe affliction and cannot understand God's dealings with him. God's hiddenness does not mean He is unaware, for He knows the way Job takes.
When He has tested Job, Job will come forth as gold, refined by the trial. The distress of not finding God can give way to continued trust, holding fast to God's wisdom and goodness and not ending trust because He cannot be seen. That trust holds even if God takes his life.
