Job 24:23

Though it be given him to be in safety, whereon he resteth; yet his eyes are upon their ways.

The saying belongs to the stretch of Job 8-27, grouped with Job 22-23. It comes after the friends have ceased their accusations and stands in the middle of Job's last reply, so it must be read together with the surrounding accusations and responses. In that answer confidence in God's mercy is expressed while the end of the wicked is set forth.

The safety granted is a time of opportunity given to the ungodly in which to repent. That time is abused by growing proud, even while divine eyes remain upon their ways. Continuing in sin is therefore no ground for confidence from apparent safety, since the majority of sinners finally perish.
