But where shall wisdom be found? and where is the place of understanding?
The question is where wisdom is to be found and where the place of understanding lies. It cannot be discovered by human searching or human knowledge, not by searching the earth and the sea nor by searching the depths of the earth. Nor is it found by attempting to penetrate the mysteries of God's being.
Wisdom and understanding cannot be obtained or bought with wealth, precious things, or earthly riches, and they cannot be priced, for their value is beyond human knowledge. They are not found in the land of the living. God alone knows the way to wisdom and the place where it dwells.
The answer given at the end of the chapter is that to fear the Lord is wisdom, and to turn away from evil is understanding. Wisdom is found by humbly receiving the revelation God has given and by conforming the life to His will. Studying God's word and following its directions teach how to learn the fear of the Lord and to depart from evil. The complete Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments unfold the gospel and are a treasure-house of wisdom.
