Job 28:17

The gold and the crystal cannot equal it: and the exchange of it shall not be for jewels of fine gold.

Wisdom is so valuable that gold and crystal cannot equal it, and jewels of fine gold cannot be given in exchange for it, so no material wealth or earthly riches can match it or buy it. It stands above gold and silver, so that even the contents of the richest mines of earth cannot compare with it. The wisdom spoken of is a heavenly treasure to be sought, the treasure of eternal realities. It is valuable knowledge, the knowledge of divine truth and of God's ways.

God alone knows the way of this wisdom. True wisdom is found in fearing the Lord and turning away from evil. Scripture gives instruction in how to fear the Lord and depart from evil. It is not found by searching the depths of the earth or by trying to penetrate God's mysteries. It is found by humbly receiving what God has revealed and by living according to His will.

The treasure is seen only with the eye of faith by one who is born again. Solid knowledge gained in childhood is a possession whose value gold cannot buy. The knowledge spoken of strengthens the mind. It is essential for salvation.

The treasure was secured for perishing souls when Christ gave His life and shed His blood for the remission of sins. When received by faith into the heart, it changes the whole person, transforming character and cleansing the impure. Those who find it are filled with a rejoicing they cannot hide but must tell everywhere what the Lord has done.
