Job 28:18

No mention shall be made of coral, or of pearls: for the price of wisdom is above rubies.

Wisdom is worth more than coral and pearls and rubies, and its value cannot be measured or equaled by any material or earthly wealth. Neither gold nor silver nor crystal nor jewels of fine gold, nor the contents of earth's richest mines, can compare with it or be weighed against it. It cannot be found by searching the earth or probing the mysteries of God's being, and it cannot be bought with money, but it is found by humbly receiving what God has revealed and living according to His will, in fearing the Lord and turning from evil. As heavenly treasure surpassing earthly riches it is to be sought above all else, and those who see its surpassing value rejoice in it and cannot hide it but go everywhere telling what the Lord has done for them.

Wisdom Above Earthly Treasure

The price of wisdom stands above coral and pearls and above rubies. It is worth more than rubies and more than any other treasure, even the rarest and most precious jewels and every precious material thing. Its value cannot be measured by material wealth, nor can it be bought with or equaled by earthly wealth.

The comparison reaches beyond coral, pearls, and rubies to gold and silver, to crystal and jewels of fine gold, to the most precious metals and gems and to the contents of earth's richest mines. None of these can compare with wisdom, match it, or equal it. Coral and pearls cannot be weighed against it.

This means solid, valuable knowledge is a greater possession than wealth. The strength of intellect and the lasting knowledge gained by studying God's ways and the plan of salvation are worth more than gold and silver. So also the knowledge of divine truth in God's Word is worth more than gold and silver.

The same comparison of wisdom with precious stones is echoed in the well whose abundant supply of clear, pure water is a treasure more valuable than gold, silver, or precious stones.

Finding and Sharing Wisdom

Wisdom cannot be bought with money and cannot be measured or equaled by the value of precious things and material wealth. It is not found by searching the earth, nor by probing the mysteries of God's being and trying to penetrate them. It is found by humbly receiving what God has revealed and by living in accordance with His will. In its setting, wisdom is identified with fearing the Lord and understanding with turning from evil, and learning from Scripture and accepting instruction lead to that wisdom.

As heavenly treasure whose value surpasses earthly riches, wisdom is to be sought. It is the treasure of God's Word and spiritual wisdom. It is the treasure of eternal realities, including the wisdom found in Scripture and the science of salvation, which cannot be matched by the riches of earth's mines. It is the heavenly Gospel treasure. When this treasure is seen, those blessed by it are filled with rejoicing over its surpassing value and cannot hide it but go everywhere telling what the Lord has done for them.
