Job 28:19

The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.

Wisdom cannot be equaled by the topaz of Ethiopia, nor valued with pure gold, so no earthly riches or rarest gems can match it or serve as its price. In its setting in the chapter, wisdom is the fear of the Lord and understanding is departing from evil and turning away from evil. God alone knows the way of wisdom.

Wisdom is not found by searching the earth or by trying to penetrate divine mysteries. It is found by humbly receiving the revelation God gives and living according to His will. Learning to turn from evil comes through studying Scripture and following it. The wisdom is the treasure of eternal realities, which earthly riches cannot equal or purchase. The wisdom is divine truth and the knowledge of God, gained by studying the Word and the plan of salvation as a lasting and substantial possession that earthly wealth cannot buy and that is beyond the value of the rarest precious stones and pure gold.

The principle applies to valuable knowledge in general, that it is worth more than gold. Strength of intellect and solid knowledge are possessions that wealth cannot buy. The principle applies also to what is truly precious beyond gold and precious stones, such as an abundance of clear pure water as a treasure of greater value than material wealth.
