Whence then cometh wisdom? and where is the place of understanding?
The question is where wisdom comes from and where the place of understanding is to be found. Its setting shows that they cannot be discovered by human searching, even by searching the depths of the earth. Its setting shows that they cannot be purchased with earthly riches. Wisdom is not gained by attempting to penetrate the mysteries of God's being. God alone knows and understands their way and their place.
True wisdom is to fear the Lord, and true understanding is to turn away from evil. Wisdom is found by humbly receiving the revelation God has given. It is found by living in harmony with His will and in conformity to it.
Turning away from evil is learned by studying God's word and following its directions. Scripture gives light and understanding. The complete Scriptures, the Old and New Testaments together, unfold the gospel and hold the store of wisdom as a treasure-house.
