Job Takes Blind Man's Hands in the City Gateby emmanuel_higgins

Job 29:13

The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

Job helped people in desperate need who were ready to perish, so that their blessing came upon him, and his care made the widow's heart sing for joy. Faithful service brings joy to people in distress, for the blessing of someone near death came upon him and his compassionate care gave widows reason for joy through his help. Helping those ready to die and bringing joy to widows was his life, and helping the needy in this way can revive those ready to perish.

Compassionate care for people in distress revives those ready to perish, gives joy to the widow, and is a blessing to them and a source of blessing through service to the vulnerable. Job brought blessing and relief to people in desperate need, including widows whose hearts were made joyful by his help. Caring in this way brings joy to widows and revives those ready to perish.

This blessing and joy is the reward gained through earnest, humble, self-sacrificing labor for others. It means doing practical, temporal good for humanity out of love for Christ, even when favors seem unappreciated on earth. People helped when they were perishing bless their benefactors, and widows rejoice because of their care.

The service commended brings both spiritual and physical help to people in need and points them to Christ. Those saved from sin and degradation will greet the workers who helped them. Their recognition and gratitude does not lessen the praise due to God and the Lamb.

Job's experience may be the experience of believers now. God sees every action and weighs every motive and will reward every such deed. In the day of judgment the good done both spiritually and temporally through unselfish actions for the saving of souls will be recognized with gratitude.

The lesson applies to feeding hungry children, clothing the destitute, and obeying God's instruction to help widows, orphans, and the suffering poor. Helping someone who is near perishing and bringing comfort to a widow are deeds of compassion that bring her joy. Such care stands in contrast to professed believers who neglect the poor and needy, for what people do for those in need shows their love for Christ.

Those who serve God should bring help and joy to people in desperate need including the widow. Youth are to be trained as agents of mercy and blessings to those ready to perish. God also makes a widowed mother's heart sing when her fatherless children give their hearts to God. After she has raised them in hardship and privation with unwavering love for the truth and deep anxiety and burden for their conversion, she witnesses the fruit of her labor when she sees them profess death to sin and the world, profess faith in Christ, and be baptized, and that sight is God giving her joy.
