When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness;
The shining of the candle upon the head and the light for walking through darkness is the illumination God gives when a person first accepts the truth and feels the power of His love, an experience that enables him to speak freely about what Christ has done for him. Losing that shining is backsliding from God, and it is shown when a person no longer speaks for Christ but talks about worldly things in worldly company. Remaining in that backslidden condition grieves the Holy Spirit and dishonors God, because it leaves God-given abilities buried and unused instead of using precious opportunities to gain knowledge of the truth and to glorify God in body and spirit.
