Job 30:16

And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.

The verse stands within the extended debate between Job and his friends concerning his afflictions, a discussion that spans chapters 4 to 31. It belongs to Job's own account of his severe trial and suffering, set within the book's broader consideration of the causes and purposes of human affliction. In it his inner life is described as poured out upon him, while days of affliction are described as having taken hold of him, conveying both the depth and the continuing force of his suffering. The Hebrew word rendered soul here is distinct from nephesh and appears only in this verse.
