Job 30:25

Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? was not my soul grieved for the poor?

Job 30:25 stands within the debate with his three friends concerning his afflictions. In that setting it testifies to his compassion, to weeping for the one in trouble and in affliction. It testifies likewise to inward grief for the poor and those in need.

The word soul refers to Job himself and expresses his own inward grief, meaning in effect that he was grieved. It names the person's emotional self, his own being moved with compassion for those in trouble and for the poor. In this the underlying Hebrew nephesh is shown to denote the seat of human feelings and affections.
