Job Sits Among Ruins with a Broken Harpby emmanuel_higgins

Job 30:28

I went mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried in the congregation.

The verse belongs to Job's account of his trial and suffering, within the larger discussion in the book of the cause and purpose of human suffering. It stands in the debate between Job and his three friends over his afflictions, which covers chapters 4 to 31 and is formed by three circles of speeches from each speaker. It falls within Job's concluding answer to Bildad, with Job's answer ending in this section before Elihu begins speaking. Job was a real, upright man who endured affliction with patience, while his friends' claims about evil and reward, though generally true, were wrongly applied to his case. In the verse Job describes himself as publicly grieving and crying out in a congregation. His crying out in a congregation indicates that people gathered at regular times for worship during the patriarchal age.
