Job 31:2

For what portion of God is there from above? and what inheritance of the Almighty from on high?

The verse stands at the close of the long discussion between Job and his three friends, in which they condemned him for his seeming self-righteousness while he felt their condemnation was unjust. To trust in riches, to put confidence in them, to rejoice in them, and to be proud and high-minded because of them is to deny the God who is above. Job did not do this, for though he was one of the richest men of his day he trusted in the living God and remembered that God gave him power to get wealth.

He looked upon his wealth only as a means of blessing the poor, the needy, the fatherless, and the widow, not as a ground for confidence, pride, or rejoicing. Integrity before God is stronger evidence of honesty than merely paying debts to other people, so that freedom from financial liability does not by itself make a person honest.
