Job 31:24

If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, Thou art my confidence;

Job 31:24 warns against making gold one's hope and saying to fine gold that it is one's confidence. To make gold one's confidence in this way is greed and misplaced trust, reflecting departure from God's will. Trusting in fine gold puts wealth in the place of trust in God. It denies the God above, who alone is worthy of confidence, and the warning applies to wealthy people who rely on riches.

Riches and worldly honor cannot give the lasting security found in God. They cannot give the lasting satisfaction and spiritual hope and assurance found in Him, and they cannot satisfy the soul. A person trusting in wealth may appear to prosper for a time. Those who put their confidence in riches will suffer many sorrows.
