Job 36:26

Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.

Behold, God is great belongs to the speeches of Elihu, which occupy Job 32-37. The declaration is that God is great beyond full human knowing, and that the number and duration of his years cannot be discovered, measured, or searched out. His eternity is beyond human comprehension, and his existence is independent of time. His infinite wisdom and power make human understanding small by comparison, including human understanding of his moral dealings and purposes when eternal life is at stake. His judgments and ways cannot be fully searched out, so people cannot explain everything in his administration or reconcile every event with his infinite wisdom and divine perfections, while he alone understands his ways and the hidden answers to these mysteries.

Human research reaches an unexplored realm of mystery, confirming that his greatness and years lie beyond the limits of human understanding. The mystery of life will never be fully solved on this side of the grave, because God in his infinity of glorious power is great and finite people cannot know him. Yet as a loving heavenly Father who knows and supplies all wants and does exceeding abundantly above all that can be asked or thought, he can be known most intimately, and that knowledge brings true happiness. The verse serves as an assurance of protection showing his wonderful ultimate care for his people. In connection with the account of his infinite power in Job 26, it points to the vastness of the universe as a display of that power, presenting him as immeasurably great and beyond human knowledge.
