Job 38:10

And brake up for it my decreed place, and set bars and doors,

God assigned the sea its appointed place and boundary, restraining it with bars and doors and limiting how far its waves and waters may go without overflowing. The regular order of nature depends on this decree, not on forces independent of Him. Its reference alongside the creation account affirms His power and authority as Creator.

Though the ocean appears wild and unmanageable, it obeys His law within its marked bed, and though its waves may rage, their confinement within balanced limits reveals the control of infinite power. The verse is part of God's questions about nature, which direct attention to deep mysteries beyond human understanding and teach that human wisdom is limited. The verse is part of God's account of creation and affirms His power and authority as Creator.

Nature's regular order and sequence depend on God's decree, power, and jurisdiction as ruler of nations and God of order working by His own laws, not on forces independent of Him or beyond His control. As Lord over nature, He can bring the waters beyond their usual bounds to carry out His purposes, as He did in the judgment of the Flood in Noah's day. The same lordship over nature will be shown in the promised future destruction by fire.

God holds back destructive waters through mighty angels acting at His bidding, holding the winds, controlling tempests, and calming the sea so they do not destroy. This truth calls for gratitude because He shielded travelers from lightning and tempest and from waves that sank proud vessels while bringing their own vessel safe to harbor. His command over the waters was shown when He rolled up the mighty deep and piled up its walls to make a path for more than a million of His people delivered from Egyptian slavery, not allowing the waters to pursue their natural course until every Israelite was safely across, then at His word releasing them to rush on and slay Pharaoh and all his host with none escaping.

The language of setting limits warns against stopping missionary work by putting up barriers that restrict workers from advancing the work.
