Job 38:14

It is turned as clay to the seal; and they stand as a garment.

The saying stands within God's extended questioning about the founding of the earth and the workings of the natural world, where the figure of soft clay taking an impression under a seal portrays the earth taking its shape. That extended questioning is poetry of unmatched majesty setting forth the works of creation. It confronts human beings with the fact that they were not present to see the earth formed, did not direct its founding, and are unable to control or master its processes.

Those same questions declare that the works of God contain profound mysteries that remain beyond the comprehension of even the most learned minds, thereby exposing the narrow limits of human wisdom. In the face of that limitation the verse summons the reader to trust in God.
