Knowest thou the ordinances of heaven? canst thou set the dominion thereof in the earth?
Job 38-40 is to be read to show that man was made last and can make no claim to have taken any part in the creation of the world or of anything that has the breath of life. The turn is to be away from human fallacies to the Word of God that man was created after the image of God and Christ by a personal God who created nature.
The ordinances of heaven are the law that controls the stars, regulating their actions and their influence on one another. The stars all act under that law in common obedience, each influencing the other to do the will of God. The ordinances governing the heavens and their rule on earth are beyond human control and understanding. The questions about them are asked not to demand answers but to draw attention to God's deep mysteries and the limits of human wisdom, teaching the need for faith in God even while searching and learning.
That heavenly order sets the pattern for dominion on earth, meaning God's people must draw together in united organization rather than acting independently. The Lord's work cannot advance soundly, healthfully and solidly when people act independently. Especially as the close of time nears, there is no such thing as every man being independent in God's work. The thought that near the close of time every child of God will act independently of any religious organization is false.
