Angels Sing Over the Newly Made Earthby emmanuel_higgins

Job 38:5

Who hath laid the measures thereof, if thou knowest? or who hath stretched the line upon it?

God asks who laid the measures of the earth and stretched a builder's line upon it to show that its dimensions, foundations and order were fixed by divine wisdom, power and design. The question presses that Job was not present to watch it done and gave no help in making the world or anything living, for mankind was created last in God's image. When those measures and foundations were laid at creation, while the morning stars sang together and the loyal angels shouted for joy over the finished work, the foundation of the Seventh-day Sabbath was laid together with the foundation of the earth in Eden. After making heaven and earth in six literal days, God rested on the seventh day and blessed, sanctified and hallowed it as a lasting memorial of Himself as Creator, given to all mankind and all the world to be remembered, kept holy and honored for all time. At that same joyful beginning God also constituted marriage as a divine ordinance, standing as firm as the Sabbath of the fourth commandment.

God Measures the Earth

Job 38:5 stands among God's poetic questions to Job concerning the making and ordering of the earth, asking who fixed its measurements and stretched a builder's line over it. The imagery presents the earth as measured out and laid in place, with its size, foundations, and arrangement established by divine wisdom, power, and purposeful design as a builder establishes a work. The questions confront Job with what lies beyond his knowledge, for he was not present to watch the forming of the earth and does not know how God brought it into being. Mankind had no part in bringing the world or any living thing into existence, but was made last, in the image of God.

The asking of who measured the earth and drew the line upon it points to mysteries in creation that human minds cannot fully grasp. Such questions are not put forward to be answered, but to show the narrow limits of human wisdom and that much even in common life lies beyond finite understanding.

The laying of the earth's measures and foundations belongs to the time of creation, when the work was finished before admiring onlookers from heaven. Then the morning stars sang together and the sons of God, the loyal angels, shouted for joy over the completed work.

Sabbath and Marriage Founded

The measuring and laying out of the earth belongs to creation, when its foundations were laid, and that same beginning is when the Seventh-day Sabbath was instituted, so that the foundation of the earth and the foundation of the Sabbath were laid together in Eden. The founding of the world with measured order was accompanied by the song of the morning stars and the joy of the sons of God, and that rejoicing marks the laying of the foundation for the Sabbath as God's memorial. The One who laid the measures and lines of the earth is the One who made heaven and earth, and when the foundations were laid He instituted the seventh-day Sabbath.

After making heaven and earth in six days, literal days, God rested on the seventh day and blessed and sanctified and hallowed it. The Sabbath was thus established at creation as God's memorial, preserving the knowledge that the Lord made heaven and earth in six days and rested on the seventh. The earth and the Sabbath have their foundations together: God made the world in six literal days, rested on the seventh, and gave that particular day as sacred rest and worship for all time.

The Sabbath was given to all mankind and to all the world as a lasting memorial of God as Creator, to be remembered and kept holy. It remains visible and honored as God's memorial, preserving the knowledge of creation and reminding the world that He who created in six days, rested on the seventh, and blessed that day is the true and living God. That joyful creation moment in Eden, when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy over the finished work, is also when God constituted marriage as a divine ordinance. He instituted at that time both the Sabbath of the fourth commandment and marriage, so that marriage stands as firm as the Sabbath.

The work of creation shows that God who made heaven and earth is the only true and living God, the Author of Christianity and the Author of all truth. He is to be acknowledged in courts of justice, parliaments, and councils, with all nature bearing testimony to illustrate His Word.
