Lo now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.
The behemoth is a beast of great bodily strength, its power centered in its loins and belly, and it is furnished with devouring jaws and teeth. It stands among the divinely inspired questions concerning the mysteries of nature, questions given not to be solved but to demonstrate the limits of human wisdom. Those questions reveal that the works of God embrace realities that lie beyond finite comprehension. Prophetically the behemoth is the Romanist power that confronted Luther on his way to Worms, threatening to burn him alive and reduce his body to ashes as had been done to John Huss, with a fire kindled all the way from Worms to Wittenberg whose flames rise up to heaven. To enter the jaws of this behemoth is to pass through that threatening fire in the name of the Lord and to stand before his enemies. To break its teeth is to overcome that opposing power by confessing the Lord Jesus Christ.
