Job 40:19

He is the chief of the ways of God: he that made him can make his sword to approach unto him.

He is set forth as the foremost of the divine workings, belonging to a disclosure of God's power in nature that holds mysteries beyond human grasp. The inquiries gathered around him are not posed for human wisdom to resolve. They stand to demonstrate that finite creatures cannot comprehend all the works of God, and that His greatness summons to faith.

He is a great devouring power to be met in the name of the Lord. At Worms he was the Romanist power, threatening to burn alive and reduce to ashes as had been done to John Huss, with fire kindled all the way from Worms to Wittenberg whose flames rise to heaven. His jaws are standing before that power in trial and in danger of death. To enter his jaws and break his teeth is to pass through that fire to stand before it confessing Jesus Christ.
