Behemoth Drinks From the River Among Reedsby emmanuel_higgins

Job 40:21

He lieth under the shady trees, in the covert of the reed, and fens.

He lies at rest beneath shady trees, hidden in the covert of reeds and fens. He is a huge devouring beast waiting in his covert with jaws and teeth to consume his prey. Such a feature of nature points to mysteries beyond human understanding and shows that human wisdom is limited.

The works of God set forth in this description can command faith even when their full meaning lies beyond comprehension. The behemoth is the Romanist power that confronted Luther on his way from Worms to Wittenberg, threatening to burn him alive and reduce his body to ashes as John Huss had been burned, with a fire whose flames rise up to heaven. To go through that fire in the name of the Lord and to stand before that power, entering the jaws of this behemoth while confessing the Lord Jesus Christ, breaks his teeth.
