Behemoth Drinks From the River Among Reedsby emmanuel_higgins

Job 40:23

Behold, he drinketh up a river, and hasteth not: he trusteth that he can draw up Jordan into his mouth.

Behemoth is an enormous devouring beast with jaws and teeth, so confident in its strength that it drinks up a river without hastening and trusts it can draw up Jordan into its mouth. Its confident drinking up of a river illustrates the vastness and mystery of God's works in nature. The divine questions in Job 40 concerning such mysteries are not set forth for humans to answer, but to expose the limits of human wisdom and to turn finite minds toward what they cannot comprehend.

This devouring behemoth represents the Romanist persecuting power that threatens to burn its opponents alive and reduce them to ashes, as was done with John Huss. To enter the jaws of this behemoth is to go in the name of the Lord to stand before that power at Worms, even when a fire kindled all the way from Worms to Wittenberg rises to heaven. To break its teeth is to confess the Lord Jesus Christ boldly before that persecuting power.
