Eliphaz Speaks to Job by the Campfireby emmanuel_higgins

Job 5:17

Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

Happy is the person whom God corrects, and blessed is the one who receives His discipline, so the chastening of the Almighty is not to be despised. The correction may wound and bring pain, yet it is joined with healing and deliverance, for He binds up and makes whole those whom He wounds. That painful discipline has a beneficial and refining purpose, and trials can prepare people for service with Him. Reproofs and warnings are to be received rather than allowed to harden the heart.

The verse encourages the afflicted not to give up under trials and divine rebuke, since benefit comes through them. Even amid bereavement, pain, and suffering, the presence of Jesus can bring comfort and brighten life, for present affliction is temporary and works toward eternal glory. The correction applies to those who have rejected God's counsel and truth, who must recognize their error and accept correction rather than remain blind to His working. It applies also to the rebuke of people who fail to recognize God's work and testimony, wounding in order to heal.
