Job 5:5

Whose harvest the hungry eateth up, and taketh it even out of the thorns, and the robber swalloweth up their substance.

It stands within the friends' contention that the prosperity of the wicked is in the end taken away from them. The hungry consume the harvest of such a man, seizing even what has been secured among thorns, while the robber swallows up the remainder of his substance. This is a general observation that is true in itself, yet it was wrongly applied to Job, for affliction is no proof that the sufferer lies under the displeasure of God.
