Can the rush grow up without mire? can the flag grow without water?
Job 8 is to be read with Job 9 and Job 10 as part of the nineteen chapters of Job grouped with Esther and Psalm 45. The book confronts the great problems that have perplexed humanity during all the ages, of an overruling providence, and of sin and suffering. In its setting God is disciplining Job by bringing him through the fire of affliction, while his three friends are determined to charge him with sin and declare that his sufferings are because of that sin, in the same way that humanity is prone to misjudge its fellows.
The rush and the flag are water-loving plants. The rush cannot grow up without mire. The flag cannot grow without water. Together they illustrate that growth depends on the conditions that sustain it.
