Joel Overlooks the Valley of Decisionby emmanuel_higgins

Joel 3:14

Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.

Multitudes stand now in the valley of decision at the decisive point where eternal destinies balance between the Lord and Satan, between truth and false ways, and between life and death. The day of the Lord is near, so the call to choose whom to follow is urgent and cities must be warned while mercy lingers and hearts are still open. In its final fulfillment the valley is the time when God's voice shakes heaven and earth and His wrath falls on the persecutors who enforce the mark of the beast, when those who rejected His word confess their fatal error and see the Sabbath as the seal of the living God. At this critical point close, pointed, earnest appeals and living ministers preaching with simplicity and the power of the Holy Spirit can break Satan's hold and bring hesitating souls to decide for everlasting life, while delay or neglect may leave them to decide against the truth. To choose rightly is to turn wholly to Christ, obey all His commandments including the Sabbath at any earthly cost, walk in the light as soon as it is seen, and go forward in baptism.

Valley and Coming Day

The valley of decision is the present decisive point where multitudes must choose their side. The choice is between the Lord and Christ on one side and Satan, the enemy, and Baal on the other, between truth and other paths, and between life and death. It is a moment of spiritual peril and opportunity in which those convinced by the evidence must decide whether to turn fully to Christ and obey, to leave Satan's side and stand with the Lord, or to refuse the cross and reject mercy. Their eternal destinies are balancing under the most solemn message of truth ever borne, so that what is decided there determines everlasting life or joining the enemies of God and the truth. The call to choose whom to follow must therefore be heard urgently, with direct appeals for a plain choice to follow the Lord if He is God and reject Baal.

The day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision, and that nearness makes the choice urgent. The urgency applies to souls considering the truth after hearing it at the camp-meeting, lest the opportunity pass without results, and to those convinced about the Sabbath yet weighing obedience against loss of work and lack of bread for the family. It applies to warning people in the cities while mercy remains and they are still open to conversion, giving them the chance to hear and understand Bible truth so they can choose the right side.

In its final fulfillment the verse describes the time when God's voice shakes the heavens and the earth. Then His wrath comes upon the persecutors who enforce the sign or mark of the beast, in connection with His coming wrath and judgment upon those who persecute His people. Those who turned away from what He spoke then confess their fatal error and realize the importance of the Sabbath as the seal of the living God.

Helping Souls Choose

Multitudes in the valley of decision are souls considering the truth after hearing it at camp-meetings and other meetings, some still undecided and still to be gathered in. Some heard the Advent message and are deciding whether to give themselves wholly to the Lord, while others are weighing whether to take a stand for Christ and keep all His commandments, with some still deciding and others publicly committing themselves. Some may never hear the truth again from human lips, and some are convicted by the evidence that the truth is present yet unsettled about bearing the cross and going forward, as when eight went forward in baptism the following Sunday and when one convinced lady decided to obey all of God's commandments.

At this critical point close, pointed, earnest appeals can help people break Satan's hold, leave Satan's and the enemy's side, take their position on the Lord's side, and decide for everlasting life. Delay or abandoning the effort can lead them to decide against the truth, so the work of bringing them to decision and establishing them on the solid rock must be completed thoroughly. That labor is to be done patiently, prudently, and in a balanced way that preserves their confidence where possible and helps them find and follow the true path to life rather than other paths.

The valley calls for living ministers who preach words received from God with simplicity, spiritual life, and arresting power, giving direct appeals for a plain choice to follow the Lord if He is God and to reject Baal. Multitudes are now standing where their eternal destinies are balancing between life and death under the most solemn message of truth ever borne, and their response concerns their eternal life, so those who preach are to remember the solemn stakes. Preparation is through prayer, humility, and the Holy Spirit, and only God's power can counter Satan's determined deception, since prompt, earnest, Spirit-filled action may save a hesitating, undecided soul.

The truth must therefore be presented clearly, calmly, and in love, so hearers have the chance to hear and understand Bible truth before the crisis in which they will either yield their will and receive it or turn away. Cities must be warned while mercy remains and people are still open to conversion, because the day of the Lord is near. Angels join Christ's wholehearted servants to bring souls in the valley to repentance, turning from sin to peace and safety, so those seeking to restore the erring are to treat them with tender sympathy and avoid driving them farther from the Saviour.

Choosing rightly in the valley means turning to Christ and obeying the truth, deciding wholly for the Lord, taking a stand for Christ, and choosing obedience to God. It means keeping all God's commandments and obeying the Sabbath even when convinced souls long to obey yet weigh loss of work and lack of bread for the family. It means giving self wholly to the Lord upon hearing the Advent message, walking in the light as soon as it is seen lest darkness come, receiving the truth with love on the weight of the evidence, and going forward in baptism, in contrast to refusing the cross and rejecting mercy at a moment of spiritual peril and opportunity.

Choosing wrongly is also in the valley, for souls who had opportunity to respond to the truth and come to Christ but received no loving effort or spiritual help made their choice and joined the enemies of God and the truth. Their chance to be won had passed through neglect, and that neglect and lost chance are recorded in heaven. After the South Lancaster Conference, Dr. Kellogg stood for a time at such a point of decision where he had to choose his course, and once he chose he continued down false paths.
