John 1:28

These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing.

These things were done at Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was carrying on his work of preaching and baptizing. The place recalled Israel's crossing of the Jordan after God stayed the river and the overthrow of Jericho, and it stirred hopes that God would again deliver Israel by a mighty display of power. There John answered the delegation sent from Jerusalem and turned attention away from himself to the coming Christ.

The verse belongs to John's witness to Jesus, whose mission was to prepare the way for Jesus and to testify that He is the Christ, the Redeemer of the world, and the Son of God. The Jewish leaders had received John's testimony about Jesus' baptism and the divine signs shown there, so they were not without evidence when they opposed Jesus.
