John 1:29, commentary and pictures

John pointed to Jesus as the long-promised Messiah sent by God to take away the sin of the world. He is the divine only-begotten Son made flesh, the innocent, holy, spotless Lamb who knew no sin. Taking away means truly removing guilt and giving cleansing by His blood, not merely covering sin while it remains. Every bleeding sacrifice pointed to Him, and at His death type met antitype, the veil was torn, and animal blood became forever valueless. Sinners are therefore called to behold Him in living faith, looking away from self to the uplifted Saviour to be pardoned, transformed into His image, and given power to overcome.

John's Spoken Setting

The declaration was spoken by John the Baptist at Bethabara beyond the Jordan as Jesus came toward him after His baptism, at the start of His great work and first advent. It identified the work Jesus had to do in the world, which He did without entering into controversy, as God's Lamb appointed to remove the sin of the world and as Messiah, Prince of life, Redeemer and Son of God. That place carried memories of Israel crossing the Jordan and the fall of Jericho, which stirred the people to hope that God would again deliver Israel. John's popular ministry there drew crowds and the attention of the Sanhedrin, which claimed jurisdiction, though he sought no approval.

God had promised John a sign so he could know and present the long-expected Messiah appointed to take away sin. The sign was the glory of God descending like a dove of burnished gold and remaining on Jesus, with angels hovering, while the Father's voice declared Him the beloved Son in whom He was well pleased. From that time John's prior uncertainty and doubt ended, for by it he then knew Jesus was the Christ, the One who existed before him and who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. That descent and voice were later appealed to as testimony the priests, Pharisees and rulers had heard and rejected, which they could not deny after witnessing John's baptism, and denial of Jesus proved rejection of John. The sign given to John was confirmed to Mary after thirty years.

John joined the law and prophets to the Christian dispensation as God's chosen prophet and representative, with none greater, looking back to them and forward to Christ. He preached with startling energy like the ancient prophets, laying the axe to the root and fearlessly reproving sin. He did so from a humble, self-denying, unselfish life that did not turn aside to court favor or applause and did not seek worldly honor or dignity nor take honor that did not belong to him.

John directed attention away from himself to Jesus as One mightier, assuring followers who thought he might be the promised Coming One that he was not the Christ. He declared he was not the Light but came to bear witness to the true Light, ever directing minds to Jesus as Life, Truth and Way and as witness to His glory. He gladly accepted obscurity, silence and decrease when Jesus was established as teacher even unto death, counting his work well done only when the mind's eye could see only Jesus the crucified One. This is the pattern for every minister sent by God not to take Christ's place or glory, not to attract people to himself nor draw sympathy and praise to finite man, but to turn every word of praise away from self, put self out of sight, empty the soul of defilement, remain hidden while Christ is seen, and lift Him up so humanity is lifted and drawn.

Hearing the announcement convicted hearers with hope that the long-waited Messiah had come. Two disciples followed Jesus after hearing him and began bringing others, where Jesus opened to them the great plan of salvation. Nathanael withdrew alone to meditate on the prophecies relating to the coming of the Messiah and His mission and to pray for certainty whether Jesus was the Redeemer, until the Spirit rested on him and convinced him that Christ was the Messiah, the promised deliverer. Peter believed and remained faithful, and dispersed Jews visiting the feasts carried the tidings worldwide, preparing the way for apostolic work at Corinth and Ephesus.

The Lamb title pointed to a suffering sacrifice as foretold by Isaiah's lamb led to slaughter, upon whom the Lord laid human iniquity, giving the coming a deeper meaning than a gift to win favor and teaching that God's love provides the gift that reconciles. The hearers and even John did not fully understand it, and John had not explained it to the first disciples whose hearts it stirred, because they looked for a great prince to bring all nations under Israel's supremacy and for a conquering king rather than a Saviour from sin. At twelve Jesus had explained to the rabbis that Isaiah's prophecies of the Messiah's humiliation, suffering and death referred to Himself, thereby giving light about the Lamb of God and the plan of salvation.

Jesus As Sinless Lamb

The declaration names Jesus as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, the promised Messiah whose coming was announced and then pointed out as present. He is the Redeemer and Saviour sent by God, the divine only-begotten Son, Commander of heaven, Prince of life, the Creator Word made flesh dwelling among men full of grace and truth. He is the true Light, rejected by His own, yet giving to all who receive Him power to become sons of God. The Spirit's descent like a dove and remaining on Him confirmed His identity as Son of God and His authority to baptize with the Holy Spirit, ending all doubt that He was the true Messiah. Spoken with assurance before the multitude with outstretched hand, the testimony led hearers such as Nathanael to weigh prophecy and seek confirmation that Jesus was the promised Redeemer and deliverer. The verse is therefore central to preaching and instruction, for every true doctrine centers on Christ and every precept receives force from His words, and it calls sinners to behold Him and Calvary as doctrine and all-powerful argument to the impenitent and warning to the backslider. By beholding the cross the sinner learns the cost of suffering from love, hates sin, contemplates compassion and tender love, and is transformed. He is the one and only answer for every burdened heart in all lands and ages, for perceiving God's loving-kindness and discerning His law as wise, just, holy, good and founded on love is not enough while man remains carnal, sold under sin, powerless to attain longed-for purity and crying for deliverance from the body of death.

He is the innocent, holy, undefiled, spotless Lamb who knew no sin and did no sin, and because He had no sin He could bear human sins and offer Himself for the race, making believers members of God's royal family and heirs with Christ. As only-begotten Son of the infinite God, Commander of all heaven and Prince of life, He laid aside glory, royal robe, princely crown, majesty, high position and command to clothe divinity with humanity, born as a humble child in poverty, so that humanity might touch humanity and He might approach fallen man. Though exalted in holiness above all who ever walked the earth, He revealed meekness and lowliness, making no lofty parade of distinctions and not withdrawing from fallen sinful beings, thus qualifying to stand at the head of fallen beings to represent, elevate and ennoble all who come for life. Though innocent He stood in the sinner's place and endured punishment so that believers might stand innocent clothed in His righteousness, and seeing His compassion moves the heart to accept Him as sin-pardoning Saviour. Human sin is transferred to Him, and the repentant sinner accepting Him is counted righteous through His righteousness and declared sinless before God, complete in Him with Christ formed within, yet still bound to keep the commandments, while those refusing their need and rejecting the Son retain sin.

His perfect humanity had to endure the terrible test without sin, stain, murmur, retaliation or failure to submit to the Father's will, for even one stain would make the offering imperfect and void redemption. Though able by command to summon angels, bring the heavenly host to His aid, use divine power to escape, or drive the mob away by divine majesty and strike down tormentors, He meekly and patiently endured abuse without retaliation. Satan led the mocking, scourging, platted crown of thorns, sweat of great drops of blood in the garden, and all degradation to provoke Him to retaliate or release Himself, which would have made Him an imperfect offering and redemption a failure. The glorious, beautiful and lovely Redeemer left the realms of glory for this dark and lonely world to give His precious life and die, the just for the unjust, bearing the whole world's burden for our sins that by His blood He might redeem unto God. He submitted with perfect calmness sustained by Godlike fortitude, and His meekness and patience under degradation exalted Him above humanity, proved His kinship to God, and became the pledge of His exaltation and anointing as great high priest through His abasement and blood. He endured Satan's fiercest attacks and knows every temptation, having created and redeemed men at infinite cost, so He can defend and judge with complete knowledge and His righteousness covers those who love and trust Him.

He volunteered to come and stand at the head of fallen beings as heirs of guilt under sentence of eternal death, bearing their guilt and God's wrath as substitute, surety, Mediator and divine-human Advocate so they need not perish. He bore the world's sins in His own body on the tree, making God's love manifest, for He alone as God's only Son equal with the Father could atone, and His life was required to destroy sin's curse. He who was equal with God and knew no sin was made sin, bowed in Gethsemane under the burden, then mocked, derided and dying on the cross, with the whole debt for transgression of God's law demanded from Him without abatement. He suffered the extreme penalty to make full atonement, satisfying justice while maintaining the law's immutability and vindicating its permanence, treated as a sinner forsaken by God so believing sinners might be treated as righteous. His sacrifice is God's measureless gift, sparing not His own Son but delivering Him up for all when humanity had no goodness, giving everything and all heaven. Receiving Him as personal Saviour pardons sin and receives sinners as sons and daughters through faith in His righteousness as gift not earned by merit, offering peace and pardon to every repentant sin-sick soul but not to the impenitent, while those not believing remain in unbelief, die in sins and suffer the second death without ever knowing by experience the suffering endured to secure pardon and adoption.

His anguish and speedy death came not from fear, spear thrust or cross pain but from the crushing weight of the world's sin and the sense of separation from His Father's love, breaking His heart. The loud cry at death and the blood and water from His pierced side declare He died of a broken heart from mental anguish in bearing sin, slain by the sin of the world. He takes the world's sins upon Himself, bearing the suffering and temporary separation sin brings, and those choosing Him are saved through His blood. He removes sin by enduring affliction, insult, abuse and temptation on every side without sinning, presenting perfect obedience that forever removes excuse for not keeping the law. That obedience shows how to obey all commandments amid abounding iniquity by laying hold of divine power, man's only hope, and by giving His life so man may partake of the divine nature and overcome corruption through lust. He is the Redeemer provided by the infinite God, the Child born and Son given with government upon His shoulder, Wonderful, Counsellor, the mighty God, the everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace, dying beneath the weight of the whole world's sins to be considered and beheld. The sinner must go beyond repentance to look to Christ, for as He is revealed at the cross the Spirit shows God's relation to the penitent.

His kingdom is set in contrast to worldly kingdoms represented under the symbol of fierce beasts of prey. His plan of government includes no employment of brute force to compel the conscience, for His kingdom is founded on peace, not force. Where men looked for God's kingdom to be established as the kingdoms of the world are, by external measures and devised methods and plans to promote righteousness, Christ implants a principle, and by implanting truth and righteousness He counterworks error and sin.

Types Meeting Antitype

He is the true Lamb to whom every bleeding sacrifice pointed, for He Himself originated the system to imprint that without shedding of blood there is no remission, and the blood of bulls and goats could never take away sin. Every victim led to the altar and every drop of blood shed pointed to Him as surety and substitute paying the ransom, and holy men of old were saved by faith in His blood as they looked across the gulf of ages to His dying agonies in the victims. When He died in A.D. 31 after four thousand years, type met antitype and the sacrificial system reached its end and ceased. At that death the temple veil was torn, signifying the way into the Holiest was opened to all so that none need await the high priest to make atonement, and by His self-sacrifice He made it possible to put away sin for those who give Him their sins to receive His righteousness.

The innocent animal first offered for sin taught Adam that sin brings death and that only the death of God's Son could expiate guilt, while showing God's goodness in providing a ransom and giving hope of redemption. Abel's lamb slain according to God's direction represented Jesus the promised spotless Redeemer to be slain for the sins of the world, whose blood must be shed because death is the result of transgression and no other death can expiate it. Cain's offering left out this meaning and omitted Him, and such faithless worship despised the offerings God required to prefigure Christ. Faith in Him brings a star of hope into the dark future of sin and death for the lost world He came to save.

The lamb offered on the altar each morning and evening, the animals slain daily at the tabernacle, and the temple offerings all represented His death and mediation, given to save from sin unto loyalty to God's law and not to leave sinners in sin. Their repeated slaughter could lose solemn meaning when treated as meaningless routine or turned into profitable trade, and the priests and elders who performed them for show, riches and honor without preparing to receive Him would value His coming sacrifice no more than the animals' blood they continually shed. Once Christ was slain there was no longer need to sacrifice a lamb to represent it, for His death made the blood of the temple offerings worthless and ended the former sacred role of the earthly sanctuary.

The Passover lamb without blemish pointed forward to Christ, and its blood prefigured His atoning blood on which sinners continually depend for safety from Satan's power and for final redemption. In Egypt the blood sprinkled on the doorposts caused the destroying angel to pass over Israelite homes when the firstborn were slain, typifying the great salvation He brings by whose merits alone judgment and condemnation are averted and believers are cleansed and sheltered from wrath. He identified Himself as the great antitype of the paschal lamb by connecting the Lord's Supper with the Passover, and with His death on the very day lambs had been slain for centuries the commemorative and typical feast reached fulfillment and gave way to the Supper commemorating His crucifixion. Rejecting Him defiles the soul and empties keeping the feast of value, as when leaders kept ceremony to avoid defilement yet were defiled by murderous hatred while remaining obedient in outward ordinance.

The lamb offered in place of Isaac on Moriah pointed to Jesus the world's Redeemer, with Isaiah's lamb led to slaughter foretelling His suffering and the Lord laying human iniquity on Him, a meaning hearers and even John did not understand because Israel often treated sacrifices as gifts to win favor rather than to teach that God's love provides the reconciling gift. Peace-offerings were a type of the great Sacrifice, expressing thanksgiving in which only the fat was burned, a portion went to the priests, and most was returned for a sacrificial meal with friends to direct every heart in gratitude and faith to the coming Redeemer, but their abuse turned attention away from the penitence and faith they were meant to foster. The yearly sin offerings expressed faith in the promised substitute yet only transferred sin to the sanctuary without fully releasing from condemnation, while the Day of Atonement portrayed the fuller work in the high priest presenting blood before the law and then placing sins on the scapegoat to carry them away in everlasting separation. The sin-offering acknowledging sin, the Levitical ceremonies meant to help see Christ and His work, and the bronze serpent lifted so that looking in faith gave life to the dying all pointed to Him and taught repentance and justification by faith bringing healing and peace, becoming empty outward observance only when replacing inward heart work.

He is the central object to which the Mosaic law, its types and shadows, prophecies, sanctuary service and sacred history point, with the sheep-gate victims and convocations keeping Him before the people and faith grasping Him as fulfillment when ready. The sacrifices under the law illustrated His great atonement and were given to prove faith and obedience, and Moses saw to the end of that which was to be abolished with shining face. Israel in Egypt prevented from offering weakened in faith, and when Christ came the Jewish nation blinded and deceived would not receive Him but led Him as a lamb to slaughter, continuing sacrifices after His coming and thereby showing failure to recognize the One prefigured and fastening guilt like salt without savor.

His death made animal offerings for sin valueless forever with no moral efficacy afterward, fulfilling the types and ending the ceremonial services so the temple services were no longer of use as sacrifices before God. The tearing of the veil signified the system had ended and the one perfect final sacrifice had been made, opening a new and living way for both Jews and Gentiles. Thereafter He serves as Priest, Advocate and High Priest in heaven offering His own blood, so no further sacrifice or human intercession can add.

Taking Away Sin Fully

Taketh away means real removal of sin, not merely covering it while it remains polluted, nor a false charity that leaves the heart unchanged. He lifts guilt from those standing under condemnation, bears the burden that no person can bear for another, and gives His own life as the perfect offering so that sin is taken away. Where sin is removed the vacuum is filled with the Spirit, the presence of Christ, illumination and joy, imparting righteousness and the knowledge of truth to those unworthy.

His blood cleanses, purifies and sanctifies from all sin, better than Abel's, offered once for all the fallen race to make salvation possible for all who will be saved. By that giving of His life He purchases people, cuts them loose from the enemy, and places them on vantage ground in right relation to God. Unlike the yearly remembrance of sins among the Jews, forgiveness in Him calls for no fresh sacrifice, for sins forgiven are remembered no more when the sinner comes in repentance and contrition. This reflects His ministry as Mediator and officiating High Priest in the heavenly sanctuary, where the slain Lamb is seen offering His blood on the sinner's behalf.

He takes away sin as substitute and surety, standing before the Father bearing the sins men commit, acquainted with each person's troubles and able to carry every burden. Though innocent of all sin He bears the guilt of the sinner, made sin though knowing no sin, so that His righteousness may be imputed to the believing soul and the burden transferred to Him. He pays the debt incurred by transgression through every temptation endured and every suffering and stroke that fell upon Him, suffering the full penalty to satisfy justice and maintain the authority of God's law. His cross thus harmonizes love and justice, reveals the depth of God's love, and draws sinners who see the crucified Redeemer dying because of sin to lay off their burden upon Him and not cling to sin as precious treasure nor keep bruising His heart.

God has made atonement for everyone, bearing the transgression of the repentant sinner, removing guilt upon repentance and confession and delivering from the punishment of the broken law. Through Him God cancels the believing sinner's debt despite unworthiness, providing without exception for every person through the merits of His blood so that all truth concerning salvation is bound up in Him. Sins covered by His blood are not to be exposed by others, which is the reason to forgive a confessing fellow member who makes amends and welcome that one back into unity, showing pity, mercy and love like His lest hardness deny Him and crucify Him afresh. The message gives hope that sinners are not outcasts but can be restored to obedience and loyalty, to be shared through a life of love that brings back lost faith.

His saving work reaches all who come to Him confessing their sins, in connection with repentance, dependence on God, humility of soul, and belief on Him as Son of God. He volunteered to stand at the head of fallen beings under sentence of eternal death, bearing their guilt and wrath so they need not perish, and receiving Him as personal Saviour pardons sin and receives sinners as sons and daughters of God with power to become children of God. Those who continue believing and keep the Word receive the Holy Spirit's power to resist infidelity, skepticism and delusion. Those who do not believe and receive Him remain in unbelief, die in their sins and suffer the second death, and the impenitent receive no pardon though provision is ample for the whole world.

No person can bear even his own sin or cleanse his own heart by works, law or merit, for all sins are laid upon the Son of God who alone was made sin-bearer. Looking into the law shows sin but gives no power, and purification comes only by faith as the sinner lays hold of the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour, turning from sin and placing hope in Him rather than self. A sinner cannot free himself by his own power but must look to Christ for help to turn, for God has made no other person a sin-bearer. Letting Him take away sin makes His death not in vain and leads to keeping the commandments and showing God's character.

Taking away sin gives moral power so that every person can overcome in his own behalf and on his own account, standing in individuality of character fit for inheritance with the saints in light. Taketh away means sin is not to be continued as if overcoming were impossible, but is to be overcome as He overcame by prayer to His heavenly Father. When tempted to speak wrong and do wrong, victory comes by refusing to surrender the will to Satan and cooperating with divine power through grace to become conqueror, believing He saves and cleanses from all unrighteousness today. Through belief in Him people are cleansed from sin and defects of character and may become partakers of the divine nature, escaping the world's corruption, discerning every spot or wrinkle to trust to His blood to wash away.

He came in mercy because His heart was touched with human woe, tenderness and love moving Him to step down from His throne, lay aside His royal robe and clothe divinity with humanity to bring salvation. Through Him crucified, bearing human sin, people are brought back into favor with God and harmony with heaven, with another probation in which fidelity is tested and love leads to belief. He Himself leads perplexed and doubting sinners to Himself, stirring the heart by His Spirit, bringing conviction while the sinner is still at home, and watching the first glimmer of faith deepen into belief that He is the only helper. He called all to behold Him as come to save not condemn despite widespread rebellion, though His own scorned Him as deceiver and pretender, yet all earthly comfort hangs upon Him.

Beholding By Faith

Behold the Lamb of God is a call to sinners to contemplate Jesus and the cross of Calvary, for the cross is doctrine itself and the all-powerful argument to the impenitent and the warning to the backslider. When the eye is kept on the cross the work is done, and by beholding the sinner learns the cost of suffering borne from love, hates the sin that brought such suffering, contemplates compassion and tender love, believes, and is transformed into His image. Beholding turns the mind from human imperfections, weaknesses, infirmities, sinfulness, poverty and wretchedness to Christ, and the Spirit conforms the character to His image, including those gone astray. To know the Redeemer spiritually and grow in faith is to understand and personally behold Him as Sin-bearer, and this looking is individual work and the only hope and the only way. To know Him thus is to believe in Him as Advocate before the Father, a living Intercessor constantly pleading for grace and power more willingly given than parents give good gifts to children.

Looking to the uplifted Saviour rather than dwelling on sins and wretched condition is the only hope, bringing life, hope, peace and rest. He is the Healer of both body and soul, the Mighty Healer who restores sin-sick souls, to whom people must look in faith turning attention from self and taking hold of saving help. Human interference and harshness cannot heal the repentant trusting in Jesus. Sin is the cause of disease and suffering, so pointing the sick made sick by sin to Jesus belongs to addressing deepest need and to teaching how to obtain eternal life, for perfection and holiness cannot be attained with diseased minds and bodies. Pointing them to Him is therefore central to effective medical missionary work.

As those bitten in the wilderness lived only by looking and would have died by dwelling on wounds and poison, so all wounded by sin are healed only by looking to Jesus in living connection by faith. Looking means coming into living connection with Him by living faith in His name and claiming Him personally as Saviour, beginning at once whatever the position or condition and keeping on looking, not expecting another to believe for one. God regards not eloquence or ready speech but the humble and contrite heart cleansed from all impurity. Every selfish, unbelieving, hasty-tempered, passionate, impure person needing cleansing must so look and live, and only then can invite others to see Him as the one who takes away sin. His death on the cross at Calvary is the propitiation for the sins of the world, He is the believer's righteousness and sacrifice, and trusting Him brings justification by faith, pardon, healing from sin, and peace with God. Look and live steadily, constantly, earnestly, for sanctification of the soul is accomplished through steadfastly beholding Him as the only-begotten full of grace and truth, the compassionate Redeemer ready to forgive and by His own blood to cleanse from every stain, received only by coming with humble heart, confession, repentance, conversion, and childlike submission and obedience.

Beholding Christ changes into His image from glory to glory by the Spirit: He breaks sin's yoke, teaches meekness and lowliness, writes His holy law in heart and mind, renews the soul, imparts His life, and creates anew. His image engraved on the heart is reflected in words and deeds, revealing the truth's power to sanctify and make the soul pure and holy. The result is a new mold of character unknown to the world, shown in a life of loving service working out grand ennobling principles that fit the sinner to enter and remain in the heavenly courts. Beholding Him by faith at the cross brings conviction that sin leads to death and awakens grateful love, so sinners drawn to see His self-sacrificing love draw near and learn meekness and lowliness. Believers are therefore to behold Him daily, look away from self, make Him guide, and proclaim Him and look to Him in faith, for His death redeems them and their churches will then show a power not now displayed.

Perceiving the loving-kindness of God and discerning His law as wise, just, holy, good and founded on love is not enough, for man remains carnal, sold under sin, powerless in himself to attain the purity and righteousness he longs for, and cries for deliverance. No sinner can rid himself of sin by any power of his own or by own works, righteousness, or self, but must look to a higher power; Christ alone has power to cleanse the heart. People are to trust in Him, confess and forsake sin, and receive forgiveness and promise of cleansing. As soon as the penitent turns from sin and looks to the Saviour for help, the Holy Spirit begins its transforming work upon the heart, bringing repentance, creating new life, and renewing heart and mind to obey God's will. Salvation is received through faith in Christ and His grace, not earned by obedience, yet faith lays hold of His merits, and overcoming is possible through prayer to the Father, resistance to Satan, and cooperation with divine power through grace, so none need keep sinning as though overcoming were impossible.

Each person must choose whether to let Him take sins or cling to them as a precious acquisition, holding them fast as precious jewels and precious treasure. To cling is to transgress the commandments of God, trample them underfoot, and declare as Satan does that God has no law, when God has a law governing heavenly intelligences and the earthly kingdom Christ came to wrest from Satan's hands. He takes sin away by paying the debt incurred by transgression through every temptation endured and every suffering and stroke, and by drawing sinners so that no one takes one step toward God unless drawn, and as drawn they see the crucified Redeemer dying because of sin and lay the burden upon Him. The call sounds down the centuries not to cling to sin and not to keep bruising the heart of the Son of God. Beholding Him is the present choice to take Christ and heaven as the portion rather than the world; to refuse is to choose the world that crucified Jesus, the same decision as between Jesus and Barabbas, deciding destiny.

The verse is to be applied personally: each must mark the door of the heart with the virtue of His blood and make calling and election sure. Now is the washing and ironing time when robes of character are cleansed in His blood, calling for thankfulness and praise to the Father for the gift of Jesus and for letting Him take sins away by letting sins go. His atoning blood is free for sinful man to claim as most precious privilege and greatest blessing, and His taking away sin is deep, wide, and continuous, washing and cleansing every soul thirsting after holiness. Saying the words intelligently means knowing this cleansing power by experience, finding repose, rest, the quickening influence of the Holy Spirit, a holy happy peaceful walk and precious communion with Christ, with the believing soul claiming His love and by its virtues standing before the throne pardoned, justified, and sanctified. This truth is to be talked, prayed, and made the theme of sacred song, and this experimental knowledge gives strength and vigor to faith, power to prayer, happiness in cheerful obedience, and success in presenting truth, so that His saving work as Sin-bearer can be explained clearly to comfort others, for earlier sacrifices were shadows and faithful beholders looked forward in faith to the Lamb while sinners now are cleansed from guilt through faith in His blood.

Saving faith is simple: look to the uplifted Saviour, come to Him for life, and believe He saves now without waiting to feel Him as Saviour and without mourning life away in unbelief, crying and hanging the head. He is God's remedy for the sinner, the priceless Gift of great love, the only-begotten Son given to remove sin, the sin-pardoning, sin-cleansing Redeemer fully able to save the vilest however grievous, for no earthly drugs save the serpent-bitten soul but His blood cleanses from all sin because He died for each person. Heeding the call means receiving Him as personal Saviour, appreciating the gift, and seeing in Him perfection of grace, truth and righteousness as the God of forgiveness, compassion and love. Looking to Him apart from self gives brighter and more glorious views of God, melts the heart in contemplation of His love, fills with thankfulness and praise, gives power to become sons of God, and changes character more and more into His image, beautiful and cheerful and lovable and full of hourly thankfulness. The Word of God is the guide-book pointing to Him as sin-pardoning Saviour and thus showing the path to heaven and the source of saving life and eternal life to all who believe, and by faith troubled hearts can be pointed to Him, receiving the message in the heart and living it with hope. When sinners fear their sins cannot be forgiven they are to look away from themselves to Jesus, through whom they find salvation, with redeeming love bringing life and victory.

Changed Life Results

Through the cross alone the works of the devil are destroyed, for the Lamb takes away the sin of the world by the sacrifice of Calvary. Beholding Him reveals the value placed on the human race, taking human nature to reach the depths of woe and lift man up. He restores the almost obliterated image of God and places His own signature upon the forehead, and His love kindles in the heart of all who continue to behold Him. Satan heard the proclamation and determined to unite all his army and human beings to ruin the race, beginning with appetite to destroy mental and physical force and make men polluted before God. He came as Redeemer to give life, sow truth in receptive hearts, bring conversion, fill with pure healthful joy, give the righteousness sought, and bestow blessings and rewards on the faithful.

Sin is transgression of God's law, and His death makes removal of every person's sins possible. The sinner is covered not by excuses or self-made righteousness pictured by fig leaves, but by Christ's righteousness received by faith by the repentant believer, which is perfect obedience to the law. Human sin is transferred to Christ who bears it though He knew no sin, and the repentant sinner accepting Him is counted righteous and declared sinless before God through His righteousness. This does not remove duty to keep the commandments, for with Christ formed within believers are complete in Him, while those refusing to admit need and rejecting the Son retain sin. He did no sin and died to save erring faulty people, so salvation is through Him rather than human merit, His righteousness imputed to those trusting Him and making them like Him by looking in faith. His death for the transgressor brings back to loyalty rather than leaving in sin, depending on the law's continuing authority, and His work does not destroy the pure holy law which remains the standard of character.

He is the priceless Gift of great love, the only-begotten Son given to remove sin, to be received as personal Saviour with appreciation as the perfection of grace, truth and righteousness, the God of forgiveness, compassion and love. Looking to Him apart from self gives brighter more glorious views of God, melts the heart in contemplation of His love, fills with thankfulness and praise, gives power to become sons of God, and changes character more into His image making it beautiful cheerful lovable and full of hourly thankfulness. No earthly drugs or medicine can save a soul bitten by the venomous serpent, but His blood cleanses from all sin because He died for each person. The Word points to Him as sin-pardoning Saviour showing the path to heaven, and His saving work is joined with the gift of His righteousness.

To know Him as taker-away is to believe Him as advocate before the Father, a living intercessor constantly pleading for grace and power more willing to give than parents to give good gifts to children. Beholding the Lamb means turning mind from weaknesses, infirmities, sinfulness, poverty and wretchedness and instead looking to Christ and living, as individual work and only hope and way. He is the one mediator between God and humanity, the price of heaven and the way to it, with everlasting life received through faith not earned by works or obtained through material benefits. The verse is a daily confession of what He has done to redeem from Satan's power, calling Christians to resist evil traits rather than let them gain control and grieve Him. As one Mediator and Intercessor sufficient to help, He is the one to bring failings to, depend on and trust, receiving instruction from His words and becoming partakers of divine nature.

Accepting Him as sin-bearing Lamb brings victory and deliverance, for His self-sacrificing humiliation and death are joined to His power to defend as the Lion of Judah. Believed with heart and soul He gives courage in fierce spiritual conflict leaving no room for cowardice, bringing victory through faith in God. That belief sustains under loss, opposition and false witness patiently for His sake, leaning on God who is true amid confusion, putting on and keeping on the whole armor of God. Believers fight under Jesus as the mighty General who never lost a battle, moving forward carrying the banner of truth, the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus. Keeping eyes fixed on Him gives courage to reach the unreached and call sinners to reconciliation, His victory enabling overcoming through faith in His power.

Beholding Him removes stones and rubbish of selfishness from the heart. This prepares servants to rescue souls ready to perish by laying hold of the perishing with one hand and God's throne with the hand of faith. It saves souls possessed by evil and facing ruin through earnest prayer mingled with genuine faith, which also confirms faith. Beholding turns the mind from difficulties and discouragement toward God's mercy, keeping mind upon His love, mercy and graciousness, giving reason for faith and hope and joy, while those not beholding talk doubt and discouragement.

Christ crucified is the gospel and central message, doctrine, warning, encouragement and hope for believers and the sorrowing. Fixing eyes of faith on the crucified and risen Saviour leads sinners to hope and assurance, trust in Christ, and a life of self-denial and following Him. Eyes must stay fixed on Him as Author and Finisher of faith, dwelling upon perfection of His character and upon Christ crucified for sins as the power and wisdom of God in conversion. Knowing God and Jesus Christ aright is eternal life, so these truths are to occupy mind and conversation, held by living faith piercing clouds and fastening upon the sin-atoning Saviour, Advocate, Mediator, Prince and Saviour slain for transgressions, in living connection as branch abides in vine to reach perfection and bear much fruit. Believers are to behold Him daily, look away from self to Him as guide, and reach by faith to the Saviour who saves as their only hope in this life.

He removes sin and gives forgiveness to the penitent, whom He first makes penitent, for it is the Holy Spirit's work to convince of sin. Those moved by conviction see nothing good in themselves and that all done is mingled with self and sin, and like the publican afar off crying for mercy are blessed with forgiveness. That forgiveness cleanses scarlet and crimson to whiteness and gives a new heart with God's Spirit within to cause obedience, making them His people. The Spirit reveals Him as taker-away to the repentant sinner hungering and thirsting for righteousness, making salvation effectual after conviction of sin and arousing to obey divine requirements. He alone can relieve guilt and bring forgiveness and hope, His divine Spirit awakening conviction and faith in those drawn to Him.

The verse includes the individual burden, for the Sin-bearer has taken sin and guilt so the sinner can cast it at the foot of the cross and be free. The burdened should not keep carrying sins but roll them off and unload them at the cross. Burdened sinners should lay guilt on Him who took it upon Himself, and God's children should plead with them to do so, especially to bring back far-wandering prodigals, for all power is in His hands to save completely all who come. Though innocent He bears guilt, and the believing sinner may transfer the burden to Him with merits of His righteousness credited. Looking away from self to the Lamb and proclaiming what He does answers Satan when he tries to fasten the burden back, ending the controversy for that time.

The foundation of all faith and hope is only the perfection of Jesus the surety, received by genuine saving faith laying hold on His imputed righteousness as the only source of virtue, spiritual power and life. This stands against satisfaction with form of godliness denying its power, trusting outward ceremonies without vital connection, ignorant of own corruption and God's holiness. Those burdened by neglect and undone work are to look steadfastly to Him and not let anxiety cloud mind till work hides Him, for beholding forbids despair even while urging individual repentance for leaving first love, since He loves those souls more than any worker can. Each must have personal knowledge of God and faith in Jesus Christ sent, then Christian virtues shine in humility with fruit of love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness and goodness to glorify God day by day. He is the sure foundation, the price of heaven with the way through faith then obedience to commandments, and faith taking hold of His righteousness alone as God's gift makes new creatures and lights to tell the lost of mercy to the fallen hopeless sinner and grace as unmerited favor sending the Saviour to seek wanderers. His righteousness frees from reliance on own righteousness and works, for salvation is through His work not human works, and faith means believing the gospel and looking to Him as Redeemer bringing peace.

Proclaiming Lifting Up

Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world is to stand at the center of all preaching and Bible instruction, for every true doctrine centers on Christ and draws its force from Him, and He must be woven as warp and woof into every discourse, presented distinctly yet gently as milk before meat rather than thrust sharply, proclaiming the crucified and risen Christ and Calvary as gospel, warning, encouragement and hope that brings joy to believers and angels and gathers souls under the bloodstained banner.
True messengers take John as their pattern, proclaiming Jesus as the Lamb without seeking honor for themselves, with self-love swallowed in love for Christ, directing hearers away from self to the True Light and never taking Christ's place, claiming glory for changed hearts, drawing sympathy, or breeding jealousy, but giving God glory alone with holy hearts softened by love, so that as He is lifted humanity is lifted and drawn with Him and alone gives strength to overcome evil.
Lifting the Saviour is the church's camp-meeting work for building the cause and vindicating the holy law, the glad message like raising the standard under His lead, keeping the Man of Calvary continually before discouraged, needy, sinful people of every age as due spiritual food with pardon, which requires waking, armor, piety and united instruction and hastens His coming.
It is the gospel invitation to be proclaimed everywhere in all countries near and far while day lasts by many voices, belonging to converted believers seeking the Christless and to the twelve and the seventy heralding His coming, and where proclaimed hearts awaken, vineyards enlarge into regions beyond, churches organize with working plans, home churches revive, and hearts open to present truth.
Christians are to speak it individually as light-bearers representing Christ in word, spirit and action on a higher plane, preparing the way by righteousness in relationships, pointing the perplexed and those in trust to Jesus, carrying on the Father and Son's saving work, showing compassion, standing back and in view of Calvary so Christ alone is exalted and no dependence rests on human guides or leaders.
Pointing souls to Jesus gives the central focus that makes salvation clear and compelling, magnifying Him as Redeemer in whom eternal life centers, and it is safe first truth for ignorant, inquiring, weary, trial-tendered souls and those in error before doctrine or controversy, enlightening darkened minds, feeding hunger, answering how to be saved, and drawing by love with opportunity even by sickbeds.
The third angel's message must proclaim Him as center not dry theory, bringing hope, mercy, forgiveness and peace before His near return alongside Daniel, Revelation and Matthew 24, directing to the cross and Calvary not human leaders unto obedience and return to the commandments.
Pointing the sick, dying and sin-sick to Him as Man of Calvary, Great Physician and Mighty Healer who heals soul and body, limits Satan, is touched with infirmities and changes beholders to His likeness unto eternal life belongs to physicians, nurses and medical missionaries who hold Him constantly before them as altogether lovely, speak simply where people are, pray, read the Word, give wisdom, peace and strength, cooperate by health laws, with care preparing hearts and health reform opening homes to sow truth.
Teachers must lead youth and children to Him as fountain of truth, forgiveness and removal, knowing holiness by experience not theory with hearts ennobled and emptied of self and Christ within, leading in beautiful simplicity with sympathy reflecting His mercy for conversion not mere entertainment or display, including seven-year-old children as God's property to be trained for Him as Advocate, Surety and Substitute.
Genuine love hates sin but loves the sinner, faithfully warning and pointing to Him rather than cloaking or excusing, for sin is to be taken away not covered, and ministers must preach Him plainly not vaguely or cleverly, with secret prayer, holy hearts subdued by love, personal experience of His righteousness, in aggressive new-field work leaning on divine help and leaving results with God, as the Spirit warns the impenitent.
God publicly lifted Him on Calvary in sight of nations, tongues and peoples using Roman power since Jews had lost capital power and did not crucify, so instead of stoning He was crucified as the serpent in the wilderness that the light not go out in darkness for the world's salvation and gathering of Gentiles as with the Greeks, fulfilling the hour the Son of man should be glorified when the Jew-Gentile wall breaks and the kingdom is perfected.
Presenting Him sets forth the Father's deep love as His representative, dispelling Satan's shadow hiding God's love; at the cross beholders recognized free forgiveness embracing the world, saw His holiness amid hatred of priests and Pharisees, and by Old with New together, Old unlocked by New and New by Old, Jews may recognize Him as Saviour with slumbering faculties aroused as a new creation.
Each soul is to look directly, draw near, sit at His feet to learn duty, trust and receive light, walk humbly with teachable spirit and not depend on human claimants with accusing, judging or flattering; in Him needs are satisfied as treasure worth surrendering all with full consecration unlike Barabbas-choosers, with heaven cooperating and the Spirit making help present, and following Him in self-denial shares His saving work.
Beholding must be held often before believers thrown among worldlings where godless talk and atmosphere peril the heart; personal labor and counteracting influences keep grace in vessels and abiding presence, helping workers exposed to worldly influences resist and keep hearts from being drawn away, lest they forsake the pure snow of Lebanon for turbid streams.
Connection with Him makes responsibilities to God and people understood, qualifies to point others showing power in forgiven lives, and calls to behold real redemption work rather than using abilities for show and public honor; abiding witnesses invite by life and word, beholding enlarges mind and sanctifies will, and turning to the deceiver instead leads to ruin.
The message must go to all including responsible, wealthy and qualified to conversion and investment of wealth to sustain missions among higher classes, open doors, carry gospel to all classes and save perishing, and it calls aged men in Veterans' Homes going to the grave to give up drink, orphans through caring fathers, perishing starving ones fed and clothed in pity, and every class high and low at large gatherings, with dress not needlessly offending.
The verse gives comfort turning mourners from the grave upward to glorify God and work for the living girded with righteousness, hope to guilty wretched as with the paralytic, assurance ending accusations for a season, pardon to the thief trusting His merits, and courage to follow steps preparing for judgment to see Him face to face, with healing of backsliding for confessors.
Knowing Him frees from selfishness unto likeness with hope of immortality, brings righteousness shining as light, calls to remove rubbish and follow the greater Shepherd and fountain as watchword, to copy His pattern not human mannerisms, and to practice temperance, simplicity and integrity as highest service.
His sacrifice remains the crowning voluntary act to be studied deeply every age; He set Himself apart at triumphal entry at Passover permitting demonstration foreseeing the cross to call attention, with facts to be verified leading to searching prophecy and multiplied converts, refusing angelic display, and emblems of broken body and blood given even to Judas brooding betrayal and revenge.
He is to be beheld with spiritual vision in prayer through darkness to see a Saviour knowing every weakness, looked to as Author and Finisher and leader teaching obedience to the Word, followed to intelligent truth, and lifted with talk of love letting self be lost behind the cross while drawing others who draw others, kept as constant watchword by shepherds in calm self-possession.
All human good comes only through His sacrifice with pardon only through Him ready to remove sin from every comer, transforming hearts, giving robes of righteousness and work as representatives; He comforts and sustains, rose and intercedes, and must be trusted unwaveringly in His name for growth in grace and truth.
He takes away sin offering pardon into God's royal family with regeneration as only path to the city, changing into likeness and overcoming inherited traits, putting away deception and evil speech; baptism candidates must be pointed to Him as bearer putting away selfishness and temper, and children of God must show His pity lest hardness crucify afresh and deny Him.
Seeing depth of sin leads to depend on His provision not merit and adore God; law conviction draws to the cross where mercy and truth meet and righteousness and peace kiss, laying guilt at its foot for forgiveness and angelic joy, then growing to love Him with mind of Christ unto everlasting life, looking not to broken law for pardon.
He gave His life as ransom for personal sin giving moral courage to run for the crown by dying to self and letting righteousness fill sin's places unto God's image; His taking humanity bore personal sins to lift and show glory, and His embrace on the cross destroyed death's holder securing those cleaving to Him unto unreserved consecration as living sacrifice.
Taking away sin is God's highest redeeming work by incarnate God giving Himself to seek and save, securing life measuring with God's life with abundant provision to save to uttermost all believing His blood cleanses, laying down life for sheep with reward of satisfied travail, purposed from creation to glorify God in redemption and proving ownership by creation and redemption.
He alone as sinless holy Son left heaven to represent the Father and help return to loyalty; doing His desire in communion makes hearts sound praise like harps, grows strong to bless others, and calls for thanksgiving and courage from forgiven believers.
He must be revealed on Calvary dying for the world with incomprehensible love softening to contrition; lifting Him with Spirit power brings repentance and forgiveness as at Pentecost three thousand converted seeing Him as exalted Prince, and beholding deepens understanding of love lest souls remain captive hopeless without God.
Sinners must come just as they are with no one beyond hope through thorough confession cleansing the temple, receiving truth inwardly and refusing false remedies and counterfeit righteousness; coming just as sinful polluted gives self to Him to remove sin, being born again with hates and loves reversed and sin seen terrible, in His strength alone for soldier service without delay.
The sinner must see himself a transgressor helpless and needy, then come with hope, sorrow, repentance, confession and broken heart which He will not despise but accept, forgive and cleanse creating holiness guiding affections, after persevering wise labor.
Looking away from self to Him as pleading in the heavenly sanctuary, relying on His mediation with instant prayer, gives tower of strength, turns from false refuge to truth shaping character, and impresses His character to reveal to others, fixing eyes on Him alone especially facing death to meet the Lord in peace.
He is the wonderful Teacher whose character shines with heaven's light, the Man of Calvary to be lifted and carried to others with daily fruit and skill causing associates to look to Him, the living Saviour who hears and saves, and the coming King in whom types of righteousness and peace reach fulfillment.
His death for the transgressor restores to loyalty since sin is law transgression, not saving in sin nor destroying law which remains character standard; God gave directions because confused heathen-mixed ideas obscured meaning lasting only until He was slain, through obedience to truth.
Salvation has always come only through Him by faith from Abel to now, with Adam, Abraham, Moses led by His merits as angel in the wilderness, and Mary having no merit or special standing by relation, for He is sole hope and relation gives no equality.
His work and mission as removing sacrifice must be understood to understand truth and given intelligently with farseeing judgment under grace, while priests' refusal from finite wisdom shows lack of being taught of God.
His blood cleanses most sinful fitting for eternal life with obedience sanctifying, is effective to transform removing defilement with grace through love giving power to become children, and makes forgiveness possible for repentant through spotless merits and ample ransom completing them in Him.
Though He died He rose and now intercedes comforting comers, removing garments of sin and clothing with righteousness to trust as living all-powerful Saviour; His atonement alone reconciles remitting past sins, and His resurrection showed victory with saints rising as witnesses after Gethsemane and cross separation.
He laid aside glory as commander to come as child giving power to become sons to continuing believers kept by the Spirit lest drift to skepticism; communion makes strong to bless, and continuing connection is required holding fast hope.
He is God's living gift accepting humiliation, neglect, shame and reproach to rescue and redeem, shedding blood to save the lost world prefigured in directed offerings unlike Cain's, with self-denial revealing hope of nobler world.
Exalting and beholding turns hearts from self and darkness to praise for magnifying His Son and saving souls, directing to the True Light by ministers and drawing eyes as watchword by shepherds in calm spirit, not taking His place.
Looking turns sinners to repent, confess and receive pardon with Spirit revealing love and transforming to serve; beholding at the cross unfolds redemption and goodness leading to repentance with incomprehensible love inspiring contrition.
He is the sin-pardoning remedy to be looked to in hope especially facing death to meet the Lord in peace, giving hope in death and the dying bedside message in simplest language with longing hearts.
He is first focus to learn belief, look and live then follow unto intelligent knowledge; His saving work after preparation through types, shadows and prophecies is central message when hearers are ready, and Bible teaching leading to know Him is essential to education for eternal life.
All words and deeds are to point souls to Him living in sunshine of presence with Him within as well of water springing to life, striking faith, hope and courage, calling through warnings, reproof and encouragement.
He mightier than workers is greater Shepherd and fountain of light as constant watchword told to others, exalted in manner and calm self-possession, with shepherds ever presenting Him.
In a few days after temple words He was to be offered voluntarily as victim; the Passover feast commemorated that death, and the innocent lamb chosen represents Him with selfless love showing purity followers must manifest, ending temple use and blood virtue.
He pardons the paralytic bringing hope to guilty wretched, alone relieving guilt with Spirit convicting and drawing to faith as only helper blessing repentant with life-giving mercy.
He removes sin pardoning soul healing mind and body with physicians and nurses carrying grace, praying and speaking so kindness eases belief; He limits Satan as physician for both, and saving power reaches soul and body.
He can save soul and body as directed One for salvation, sufficient as Mediator to bring failings, depend, receive instruction and partake divine nature, with unity displaying power to the world.
The verse directs baptism candidates to Him as remover while gospel requirements bear on life, and calls Edson to look to suffering death and surrender wholeheartedly, putting away selfishness, temper, indolence and wrong habits as sympathizing substitute.
He is pictured as healer from leprosy-like pollution to whom sinners are pointed; beholding calls to remove rubbish as He rescues from ruin.
He is to be held up as relied-upon Saviour with personal labor and oil in vessels, to be lifted and proclaimed by followers, to be beheld as taker-away, foundation of truth, followed Sin-bearer, divine remedy and tower of strength, preached truly only with secret prayer, experience and holy heart.
He is the sacrifice to which offerings pointed, great peace Sacrifice abused from penitence, central Mosaic object grasped by faith, fulfillment made flesh, only valuable sacrifice making perfect atonement, voluntary offering, great antitype and Passover antitype acknowledged at baptism confirming Mary.
He is the sinless Egypt lamb antitype, Redeemer of fallen world, crowning Passover Redeemer giving life, taught Saviour, John's teacher closing in self-denial, True Light, greater Shepherd, fountain, indwelling well, Author of faith, heavenly Priest, hearing Saviour and gospel center.
He is physician for sickness, sympathizing substitute bearing griefs, Sin-bearer, sin-pardoning Saviour, divine Son saving by death, spotless saver by merits, innocent life-giver, Abel's slain Lamb by direction, daily tabernacle Lamb saving unto loyalty, cleansing sheltering Lamb and purchasing Lamb.
He is transforming blood shaping character from false refuge, garment-removing clothier, holiness-creator, leprosy-healer, risen preached Saviour, communion Redeemer, praised Sent One, glorious burden-bearer mocked and thorn-crowned, humiliated gift, soul-saving bearer and character-shaping look.
He is to be fixed upon not humans, held before worldlings with counteracting labor, kept in preaching explaining law-transgression, pointed to by deeds in sunshine, told as watchword, proclaimed plainly, presented to sick, to baptismal candidates, to children as foundation, while upholding law, meeting needs and not displaying cleverness.
He is publicly lifted under Rome to call nations, acknowledged by God's voice at baptism, warning faithfully not cloaking, pardoning the paralytic, ending sacrifices opening the way, testifying law's permanence covering with obedience-robe, enabling not continuing in sin, softening to repentance, impressing character and availing mediation in prayer.
He is to be followed to truth as tower of strength, conformed to in temperance, approached after conviction, pointed to by orphan workers meeting needs, deepening love-knowledge, giving hope in death, giving strength, calling to surrender, joining dispensations through John applause-free, ushering Messiah with returned prophecy, revealed by sign, heard by Peter and questioned by Nathanael.
He is set apart at entry for study, offered after temple words, clarified for confused worship, fulfilled in offerings remitting past sins alone, remembered at convocations, atoning alone for past sins, bringing immortality, pleading in sanctuary, ransoming amply, cleansing most sinful, hating sin in cost, vindicating law, empowering witness and keeping purity like Lebanon snow versus turbid valley.
He is perfecting offering ending efficacy, saving from sin to loyalty, missing in Cain's offering, slain in Abel's type, centered in Mosaic faith, fulfilled when ready, typed in abused peace-offerings, devalued as routine trade, little valued pointing to Redeemer, continuing only until Antitype slain and teaching true meaning.
He is sheltering Passover blood cleansing and averting wrath by faith, doorpost sign, judgment-averting merits linked to Supper, daily mediation for guilty, forward-looked Victim, post-way Priest, only valuable atonement, temple-useless antitype-meeting, forward-pointing blood, praise-turning heart, True-Light direction, watchword strength and human-independent strength.
