John 10:24

Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

John 10:24 belongs to Jesus' teaching in which He presents Himself as the good Shepherd, who lays down His life for the sheep and knows those who believe in Him, while believers are as a helpless and dependent flock. That presentation of Himself as the true Shepherd sets His care in contrast with the failure of the leaders of Israel. In that setting the Jews come round about Him and press Him for a plain declaration of whether He is the Christ, the Messiah.

Their demand comes amid divided responses to Him, with some rejecting Him while others conclude that His words and works are not those of one possessed by a devil. He had already told them who He was, and the works He did in His Father's name bore witness to Him. Despite that testimony of His works they did not believe because they were not His sheep, so their question came from unbelief rather than from lack of evidence.
