John 12:44

Jesus cried and said, He that believeth on me, believeth not on me, but on him that sent me.

To believe on Jesus is to believe not on Him alone but on the Father who sent Him, for Son and Father are one so that Jesus reveals the Father. To see Jesus by living faith is to see the Father who sent Him, and to reject the light and message given through Him is to reject the Father's word. He came as light into the world so that everyone who believes on Him will not remain in darkness but is brought out of darkness into light. He came not to judge the world now but to save it, yet whoever rejects Him and does not receive His words has a judge, for the word He spoke will judge him in the last day, since He did not speak from Himself but exactly as the Father commanded Him, and that commandment is everlasting life. It was a loud cry from intense desire that people receive the truth and live, calling to self-surrender and self-denial to follow where Christ leads, while believing yet hiding faith for human approval resists the light and risks being overcome by darkness.

Believing Means Believing Father

Jesus cried out with a loud voice from intense desire that people receive the truth and live. To believe on Him is to believe not on Him alone but on the Father who sent Him. This is because the Son and the Father are one, so that Jesus reveals the Father. His authority to promise a heavenly reward to those who suffer for His name shows His oneness with God. Those commissioned by Him to carry the gospel bear the same testimony, that believing in Christ is believing in the Father who sent Him.

To see Jesus is to see the Father who sent Him. Those who see Christ by living faith see the Father. Rejecting the light and message given through Jesus is therefore rejecting the Father's word. Rejecting Christ or refusing to acknowledge Him shuts the mind to God.

Light, Judgment, and Response

He came as light into the world so that everyone who believes on Him will not remain in darkness, but is lifted out of darkness into light. That believing turns the person from darkness, bringing him out of darkness into light rather than leaving him to abide in darkness.

He came not to judge the world at this time but to save it, so if anyone hears His words and does not believe, He does not judge him now. Whoever rejects Him and does not receive His words nevertheless has a judge, for the word He spoke will judge him in the last day. He did not speak from Himself, but the Father who sent Him gave Him commandment what to say and what to speak, and that commandment is everlasting life, so He speaks exactly as the Father told Him. Receiving Christ therefore means hearing and receiving His words and obeying them, for His words are the Father's commandment given Him to speak.

People are accountable for the light they receive, for His coming and speaking gave clearer light so that refusing truth then left them without excuse. Those who lived before that light reached them were not accountable for rejecting what had not been shown to them. Believing yet hiding faith to gain human approval resists the light and prefers human praise to God's favor. Those who reject the light risk being overcome by darkness and hardened against further appeals.

The verse calls to self-surrender and self-denial, to refuse the impulse of the natural heart and follow where Christ leads instead of planning to benefit self and walking in paths of own choosing. It costs something to be saved, though heaven paid an infinite sum to provide salvation. Those saved become willing subjects of Christ's kingdom, the elect chosen of God, using every capability in sacred service, while those lost are lost because they choose their own way and will and refuse discipline and captivity to Christ, which is the freedom of the sons of God.

At the very close of this earth's history Jesus still reads hearts and knows the sentiments of every soul, and His voice is still speaking these words inviting each person to believe in Him. Coming to the light and keeping in the channel of light then means receiving present truth, the special message given to the world. That is even the third angel's message with its vast field of heavenly treasures, for no one can preach Christ and present the truth as it is in Jesus without presenting the truths that must come before the people when important developments are taking place. Living faith beholds Christ and leads to transformation into His likeness. Those who truly see Christ and trust and abide in Him receive power to work miracles for God's glory.
