Jesus Shines in Glory Among His Eleven Disciplesby emmanuel_higgins

John 13:32

If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall straightway glorify him.

The words belong to the eve of betrayal and crucifixion, when Jesus was approaching His imminent departure and coming separation from the disciples and preparing to leave them and tell them of it. They were spoken immediately after Judas went out to do Satan's work in the streets of Jerusalem, no longer favored by God but abandoned to complete his betrayal with Christ's enemies. With the traitor gone, the painful restraint on Jesus during His last sacred meeting with the disciples was removed, and His countenance became cheerful and radiant with divinity clearly seen in humanity, transfigured and exalted above everything earthly. He marked that release and coming separation not by wasting words over the traitor's departure or speaking of the dreadful ordeal He must endure alone, but with tenderest affection as an irrepressible living spring of water, filling the disciples with admiration and love and a sense of co-partnership with Him that took away all thought of contention or desire to be first.

The meaning is that God is glorified in the Son, the Son of man, and that because of this God will in turn glorify the Son in Himself, and do so immediately, straightway, soon. Christ's approaching humiliation and suffering would glorify the Father's name through the events now approaching, with approaching death and the glory bound up with it. Bringing that glory to the Father was a central purpose of Christ's mission and a source of joy to Him. The disciples did not yet fully understand these truths about His approaching death, glory, and separation, but would understand them after the resurrection.

As part of the chapter-long instruction and prayer expressing God's will for His people, the verse is connected with believers being made one with Christ in this life and remaining one with Him throughout eternity, calling for unity and love with one another and with Christ. Living that prayer out in practical life gives strength to withstand Satan's attacks and to stand the test. Its words are not being heeded while God's people spoil His work with the defiling rubbish of unkind talk, passing judgment, and self-assured conversation that hurts souls. They are then handling strange fire instead of receiving the Holy Spirit to cleanse their lips and make their counsels a savor of life unto life rather than a savor of death unto death.
