Jesus Comforts Thomas and Philip in the Upper RoomBible World
14:6John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Jesus himself in his own person is the only way to the Father and to heaven, salvation and eternal life, with no other way by which anyone can come to God. He is the truth itself, the complete source and standard of all truth, and he is the life itself, the foundation and giver of all spiritual and natural life and immortality. To know and see him is to know and see the Father, because he reveals the Father's character and has the Father dwelling in him. He opened that access by giving his life as a sacrifice on Calvary and by his mediatorial work, so sinners are accepted and saved through faith in him and not by their own works, merit or righteousness. Following him as the way means walking in his footsteps in obedient discipleship, learning his ways, keeping his commandments and doing his works, and proclaiming him plainly as the only path, truth and life to others.
Farewell Discourse Setting
Jesus spoke these words in the upper chamber on the night before His crucifixion, near the close of His earthly ministry with cruel death ahead and before His ascension, to the eleven alone after Judas left, to comfort His troubled disciples who were distressed by His coming departure and facing severe trials, directing their thoughts to His mission and to the joy that His humiliation would glorify the Father. He knew the terrible ordeal that awaited Him, yet His thoughts were not of Himself, and He desired to strengthen them to endure without failing. He knew the trials that would come to His church through unconverted believers, and these words of comfort and consolation impart courage to stand fast in the most trying hour, bringing strength and assurance to the true believer as long as time shall last.
The statement answered Thomas, who in unbelief and doubt said the disciples did not know where Jesus was going or how they could know the way, after Jesus had said He would go to prepare mansions and come again to receive His own and that they knew the destination and the way. Thomas did not believe the Word of God and did not discern the divine character of Christ, showing weak faith and failure to recognize who He is. The lesson is to be believing Christians instead of doubters, believing God will do more than can be asked, unlocking God's storehouse with the key of faith and showing Jesus' compassion in larger measure. The declaration was followed by Philip asking, Lord, show us the Father, and it sufficeth us, after long time with Christ without knowing Him. Jesus was grieved at this unbelief and lack of faith, that after being so long time with them, walking with them and talking with them and feeding them by miracles, Philip had not known Him and had not comprehended that He was the Sent of God.
The verse belongs to His Let not your heart be troubled farewell words of comfort in John 13:31-38 and John 14-17, joined to believing in God and in Christ, the many mansions in the Father's house, and His going to prepare a place and coming again to receive them to Himself, as valuable truth to be received by living faith. His departure was not a final separation, for He went to prepare a place and would come again to receive them. These are rich promises and assurances of God that bring comfort and blessing to others. With John 6 and John 13, 15, 16 and 17 it stands as part of the gospel given as the divine antidote for the sin of the whole world, holding deeply important lessons and richest promises as final instruction before separation to build ministry on the divine Christ, since without divine power joined to human effort the appointed work could not be accomplished. It belongs to God's plainly outlined will in John 13-17 for those who minister in word and doctrine, giving the philosophy of genuine missionary work to be done by those acquainted with present truth, which converted ministers need to understand and to believe and live out as meaning just what it says.
John 14 presents God's love for the whole world and shows that when people draw near to God He draws near to them, when anyone takes a step toward Jesus He advances toward them. It gives essential lessons about faith and love, while warning against letting the world absorb the heart, for love of the world expels the love of God, and God's love restores divine power to the heart which with human effort can displace worldly love by keeping heaven in view, requiring people to take a decided stand for Him and serve faithfully at home, in neighborhoods, and in the church. It holds lessons Christ intends for all future generations, with deep meaning comprehended by adhering closely to simplicity of truth. Its light and understanding come not from the mere letter but from the entrance of the Word into the heart as interpreted and applied by the Holy Spirit cooperating with the willing human agent, and to the consecrated mind increased understanding is given as the light is shared, bringing sweet peace, hope, encouragement, fervor of love, comfort in God's love, and depths of His love words cannot express when received inwardly, but working no transformation when kept only in the outer court.
John 14 holds lessons of deep import and richest promises, to be studied diligently, searched word by word, and even committed to memory as a storehouse of truth supplying Thus saith the Lord and It is written to speak a timely word to the oppressed, sorrowful, afflicted, and perishing, so souls filled with it become like a garden whose waters fail not refreshing all around, while neglect leaves little real piety despite great light. Its words in John 14-16 are so simple that all, even children, may understand them, yet they were contrary to the wishes of the disciples and they could not comprehend them. The verse is among the promises of John 14 to be opened in trouble and difficulty when hardly knowing what to do, to be read at family worship so children's young minds comprehend its wonderful truth, to be believed as God's Word and laid hold of and presented to family members, giving peace and hope and rejoicing in discouragement with assurance that God will not leave His people comfortless, a promise proved true.
The chapter is part of Christ's instruction about the future to keep disciples from ignorance and strengthen them for coming trials and difficulties, reflecting His love and meant to be remembered in their work and counsel. With John 15-17 it is plain farewell instruction given because He knew every phase of experience and every conflict they would meet and was grieved they must pass through manifold afflictions from the world, preparing them for trial and temptation to lose faith by mingling bright hopeful lines with the dark and making every provision through faith so they would not fail in a dark troubled future, of highest value for every consecrated soul. The disciples' understanding of this revelation remained partial until the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost, and its complete fulfillment lies ahead when faithful followers will understand what is now mysterious and see God. Belief in Him as the Way, the Truth and the Life with sincere fervent love was held in the peaceful home of Lazarus of Bethany where He often found rest from care and labor, with Mary as earnest listener, Martha, and the whole household in sympathy with Him while knowing the deep enmity, injustice, and false charges of the Pharisees against Him.
Christ the Only Way
Jesus himself personally is the path, the reality and the source of life, and the only way to the Father and to heaven, salvation and eternal life, with no alternative ways to choose. Those who are not following him cannot reach the heavenly home, and seeking salvation by refusing obedience or by one's own righteousness is attempting to reach the Father by another way. To know him is to know the Father and to see him is to see the Father, because he reveals the Father in words and works, with the Father dwelling in him and doing the works, and those who surrender to him and welcome him into the heart are in safe keeping, possessing truth and complete in him. His declaration was his answer to Thomas about not knowing where he goes or how to know the path there, a very precious promise and precious light, and it belongs with the answer to what truth means and with Philip's request to be shown the Father after long time without knowing him.
Sin separated humanity from God and heaven with no way back, leaving people unable to find return, and Christ bridged that otherwise impassable gulf through his own body, reuniting what sin divided so wanderers far from God can return and be accepted. He pledged himself to bridge the gulf made when Adam and Eve yielded to Satan, by which earth was separated from heaven and humanity estranged from God. Those separated are therefore prisoners of hope placed on probation, and he gives help and strength to everyone who desires to cross and to everyone who believes, showing the path and lighting each step as they grow in strength and grace. In his humanity he reaches people and in his divinity he reaches the throne of God, joining humanity with God as the way of escape and sole refuge for the guilty, and in his human life he lived out God's law and revealed the Father's character.
Like the ladder Jacob saw stretching from earth to highest heaven, Christ joins earth and heaven, serving as the ladder by which people climb to heaven. He came as a human being, faced temptation without sin and won the battle against evil, became a servant laboring to redeem and save, freely gave his life and lives again as Intercessor, so that through his merits people can resist temptation, be delivered and be saved. After Adam separated humanity from God he bridged the gulf between humanity and divinity, and if that connection fell short by even one inch all would be lost, for humans of themselves can do nothing. People reach the Father by clinging to Christ and ascending through him, and by uniting human weakness with his divinity they are drawn up step by step by the cords of God's love.
Christ is the sure way to glory, with truth shining on that way and life sustaining those who walk it, and believers can confidently follow heavenward because the path is outlined in the Word. He is the foundation of all spiritual life, and natural life also comes through him in God. Following him means walking in the path of perfect obedience and continually receiving new strength for the journey toward heaven, with truth lighting the path at every step. The way is a narrow path cast up for the ransomed to walk in, a clear path of holy light admitting all, so that even the most guilty person and the most hesitant seeker can find it and need not fail, yet sin cannot be tolerated on it. Access is provided through faith in him who saves completely those who come to God through him, and the way to God is the path of faith provided by God and not made by human effort, wide enough for even a hardened but truly repentant sinner yet narrow with no room for sin, leading from darkness to light and to God's throne.
Jesus is the sure guide and the way to holiness and heaven who leads the humble, earnest, wholehearted seeker who chooses to follow fully. He opened this path at great cost so his followers are not left to find their way in darkness or to stumble, but he is at their side along the royal, divine path prepared for the redeemed. He calls people to follow him along the narrow way, and the humble seeker who follows is directed safely toward the mansions he has prepared, with the light of revelation making the path clear so no one need wander from the way of holiness.
Jesus is the sure path to eternal life and heaven, and following him means walking in the light on a plain, certain road, while failing to follow him means missing the way. His path involves self-denial and self-sacrifice, and those who follow it can trust his guidance and be kept from going astray.
He is not merely a guide who gives directions but is himself the way, leading his followers by going before them to clear obstacles from their path. He teaches obedience through his own life, gives a practical example to follow, removes darkness, and as true Helper keeps them from walking in darkness. Following him therefore means walking in his footsteps.
He is always the Way, the Truth and the Life and the Light of the world, ever near his people and ready to help them do right. Even in dark, perplexing and discouraging times there is no need to lack knowledge and no reason to make grave mistakes, because he is close and invites those who dishonor God to turn to him for help to cease doing wrong. He is the true voice to follow when many voices call to wander into false paths, and standing close beside him keeps from stubbornly choosing a personal way, while his clear voice directs those who have taken missteps and following him means living God's law as he lived it rather than trusting human opinion or imperfect standards.
Christ is the way who directs people through every situation and perplexity, the truth who gives sure counsel, and the life who remains a sympathizing friend in sorrow, bereavement and loneliness. Those who surrender their lives to his service are not left without provision, and even when they make missteps through ignorance he does not forsake or abandon them but makes his voice clear to direct them. He is a sure Guide and Counselor in every condition of life and business and a Friend to trust in every loneliness, so pride of opinion must be humbled and listening to him stops contention and leads into unity.
Coming to the Father through him is nigh, simple and plainly revealed in the Word, not afar off, laborious or intricate. Rest is found by trusting him personally and resting in his love and righteousness rather than seeking worldly wisdom, doubting and being troubled about many things. The way of life is to be made just as clear as it is in him so all can see it, with help in him for every needy longing soul, for faith is simply to take God at his word and to believe he is a present help in every time of need. Its beautiful simplicity is so easy that many think they must do some great thing and go through some wonderful process to be converted, and when it is presented simply they stand amazed and hardly dare accept it.
He is the true way to Paradise reached by looking to him as Author and Finisher of faith. Those who look to him will not miss the road, because he gives them moral power. God helps each person who appeals to him in helplessness, and heavenly angels work to lead people to him.
His teaching gives the true way to heaven, unlike human instruction and traditions which cannot provide a reliable path to salvation or prepare people for immortal life. He is the way people are to follow and lead others to, where coming into the light means turning to him and accepting the Spirit's guidance brings the right direction. Those who accept the Spirit's leading will recognize dangers, take the right course, and guide others to him.
He is the true path to the Father and the source of life whom people in the valley of decision can find by coming to him, and the truth is to be presented as it is in him. He is the true way to God, the source of truth and light and the giver of life, and confused people are to have the way made clear through him so that darkness is removed and they may follow God's will.
He is the Way because he shows the path that leads to heaven, the Truth because he came to reveal the pure truth of God with no mixture of truth and error, and the Life because he promises to impart his efficiency to everyone who believes on him. His pure truth stands against counterfeit truth in human precepts, deceptive theories, false science and pantheistic ideas, for all error is misleading even when clothed with garments of heavenly beauty.
Christ is the Leader to follow instead of human leading, and the way illuminated by the Sun of Righteousness that must be pressed on in. Walking in that way requires receiving strength from the Life-giver, and as obedience moves forward his light shines on the path and his strength sustains, carrying forward from strength to strength and from grace to grace and making more and more Christlike. At all times and places and in every need he is a present help, leading those who submit from the low level where sin left them to the loftiest heights of grace, walking in the light of his countenance and showing that he is light with no darkness at all and giving evidence of completeness in him.
Jesus himself as the way, the truth and the life is sufficient for salvation, so salvation does not depend on brilliant descriptions of heaven or emotional excitement. Heaven is to be beheld by faith rather than natural sight, while his followers work for God in a darkened world.
Christ the Truth Itself
Truth is Christ himself, not merely a teaching, for he is the complete truth and the complete system of truth at the center of Christian faith, the source and standard of truth who came down from heaven though the world failed to recognize and receive him, and he himself is the truth through which disciples are sanctified, having set himself apart for their sakes so that receiving him gives power to become sons of God. His truth purifies from moral defilement and shapes character into righteousness and holiness expressed in good works and kind thoughtful love to the needy, distressed and suffering, which is practical obedience, and to know him is to know and see the Father, for he is in the Father and the Father in him, his words not of himself and the indwelling Father doing the works. All truth comes from him and returns to him in greater splendor, and his life stands against all error, for no prevarication, untruth, supposition, fable or false theory ever passed his lips but only pure unadulterated truth with the freshness of new revelation, because he is the Word and wisdom of God and as truth itself could not by word or practice testify to anything wrong. He declared himself not only the true Messiah but the Truth itself with deeper meaning than the disciples grasped, as the source from whom all rays of truth radiate and to whom truth received returns in fruit working in harmonious action toward eternal life, so that apart from him science misleads and philosophy is foolishness and theories separated from him originate with Satan and stand exposed by his life. Christ himself, not merely his teaching, is the way to the Father, and he is the truth and the life because of the divinity of his character with power to give life to all creatures, and he alone is infallible unlike human positions or ideas. His words are true and carry deeper meaning than their plain appearance, discerned by minds awakened and quickened by the Holy Spirit to uncover their precious value, and they are to be obeyed, found through earnest patient study and prayerful searching rather than indifferent or half-hearted reading, for living by God's Word rather than human theories brings truth's guidance, sound faith and safe action. His teaching revealed deep spiritual truth with heavenly light and meaning, reaching hearts and directing to God's honor and glory through miracles, in contrast to the dry lifeless explanations of Scripture given by the rabbis. As truth his teaching was spoken in easily comprehended language yet with deep meaning, using parables and simple everyday illustrations and the simplest form of expression to convey grandest truths of eternal importance, so a child can understand yet the wisest scholar cannot fathom them, and that truth is meant to be practiced and known through answers that make it clear. His teaching had power because it expressed both his lived experience and his character, for he did not merely teach truth but embodied it, with thought, character and life experience embodied in teaching, so truth was lived in him and not only spoken, and therefore ministers and teachers must make the Word their own by personal experience in order to impart it effectively. Jesus is truth personified, and in his humanity he is the example in all words and works, with no inconsistency between daily life and teaching, magnifying and honoring God's law, while truth as his authority gave force to requirements, commandments and reproofs, never languishing on his lips nor suffering in his hands, and his life of pure holy disinterested benevolence unmarred by selfishness proves what man may become as partaker of the divine nature. Christ is the truth standing in contradiction and decided opposition to all fallacies, deceptions and every phase of untruthfulness, and truth received from him leads the true believer to trace every advantage, convenience and comfort back to God as the divine Fountain, while truth stands in elevated nobility with royalty, sacredness and divine sanction and must not be brought down to common things, regarded as fiction or left as speculation, for God raises truth on high and places his signature upon it to rescue it from companionship with error, since human imagination is chaff while truth is wheat and teachers must never put forward human imaginings as truth. He is the living embodiment of truth whose calmness under contempt, deceptive opposition and reviling shows truth remaining firm amid attack, yet although he was truth people scorned him as a deceiver, rejected and mistreated him and finally crucified him. As the truth he was crucified by the religious rulers because he exposed their evil works, thus rejecting truth itself while claiming to possess the only true religion. Truth may be covered by lies, distorted, misapplied, reproached and scandalized, but it does not perish and its brightness returns with power no human source can give, and though he as the Way, the Truth and the Life was rejected, why people did not believe or acknowledge him will be answered only in the judgment. He is the truth so that refusing truth is refusing him, and those who cherish resistance to truth brought by God's messengers refuse him with darkness as inevitable result, while entrance into the kingdom is by faith with self and selfishness left out, becoming as a little child, receiving truth in love of it and working together with God to discern the kingdom's spiritual character. Jesus himself is the truth with eternal life to give, and following him keeps from walking in darkness, for God sets this light and truth before every person while Satan presents his own darkness falsely crying that light and truth are with him, and God gives enough evidence for faith so those who surrender choose light, while those clinging to independence and refusing correction reject Christ as the Jews did when exposed and reproved and go into self-deception until they do great evil while flattering themselves they work for God. Competing claims to truth are false when they lead away from him, for his words give eternal life and those who follow him do not walk in darkness, while rejecting light and refusing correction leads to serious self-deception even while believing one serves God, even to believing opposition to him is service to God. He himself is the Truth to whom people come to receive life and uplift, bringing truth to the ignorant and erring, teaching wherever it could reach them and welcoming all who would come, so accepting the truth as it is in Jesus means accepting him, while rejecting him means turning from the Son of God and choosing Satan's falsehoods. Jesus himself is the Truth and the Life, so arguing against his words is moving away from him, and those who cavil find ever more cause for cavil until they turn from him entirely, choosing darkness at peril of their souls, with truth staying hidden and mysteries remaining so they walk blindly toward ruin when they refuse light. Bitterness toward the truth is bitterness toward Jesus, which is why those bitter against him stand opposed to truth and why God's people should not give them sympathy at the expense of fellow believers. Christ himself is the truth, so those who reject him as guide cannot discern spiritual things, while his disciples recognize him as Way, Truth and Life and through him gain experiential knowledge of the only true God and of Jesus Christ, knowing his presence by faith and representing him through obedience and witness. Jesus as the Truth alone has understanding, and choosing to listen to the deceiver instead of him brought loss, confusion and dulled mind leaving people unable to appreciate God's good, while as truth and guide his life revealed truth with power to resist temptation proportionate to conformity to God's Word which he himself had given holy men to write, lived in communion with God and complete surrender regardless of false education, customs or traditions. He came to expose false theories threatening salvation and to make truth clear, not abolishing God's law but by living it in purity showing its true meaning and revealing God's character expressed in the law, and despite Satan's accusations vindicating the law as the Word and wisdom of God. Truth does not exalt human beings but glorifies him, and anything that dims or eclipses him is falsehood, while the Spirit of truth exposes and removes error and his followers are to walk in the light and remain distinct from the world. As the Truth the Son of God came in human form to limit Satan's power and restore humanity by revealing truth, presenting truth to the apostate race through God's Word in contrast to Satan's falsehood, enabling people to understand spiritual things, with the gospel seed sown to bring people back to loyalty to God. The plan of redemption is centered in him as the Truth and the Life, and through the Spirit working in him truth reaches the human heart and draws people to God by proclaiming truth not by force, bringing neglected truth and obligations into view and restoring truths obscured by error. God seeks to save souls through Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life, while Satan continually seeks to ruin souls by confusing minds about him with masterly inventions and crooked deceptions, including moving men to persecute even unto death to force worship of an idol sabbath, yet persecutors can cause bodily suffering but cannot control conscience, tarnish the soul, change character or harm souls of those who conscientiously serve God. His words are wholly true and give spiritual strength when made part of daily life, for he is the bread of life come to give life to the world, and his truth and heavenly wisdom lead toward salvation, while his life reveals God's love and truth and his example teaches how to live in preparation for heavenly life. Truth in Jesus comes from God and saves, converts and sanctifies those who accept it, transforming character through the Holy Spirit, softening what is impetuous and rebellious, bringing harmony with Christ and one another, removing national prejudice and uniting believers rather than preserving separate interests, for receiving truth as it is in Jesus means partaking of his love, tenderness and compassion, with the Word applied to the soul sanctifying for service and leading to share the divine nature. He is identified with truth, and truth joined to him and received as the Word refines and sanctifies the soul so people can delight in it, with his teaching presenting truth in simple words even the lowliest can understand. As the truth his character is to be represented by those who accept the truth, so conduct contradicting truth dishonors Jesus and misrepresents him, and angry words dishonor God and fail to represent him. As the truth he must be enthroned in mind and heart, and while the church is still militant and not yet triumphant no one can have peace without his abiding Spirit and except through his cross, for he takes his place as Prince of Peace only when received as the truth within. As truth, truth comes from him directly and without corruption, and when received inwardly into the heart it has great results, developing and showing itself in character and expressed in spiritual effect. He is the source of truth who leads to God, and truth held in the heart guides to him who alone can cleanse defilement, with living by truth's principles bringing peace. He is the complete system of truth and the center where true believers meet in unity with characters shaped by him, and truth from heaven through him cleanses moral defilement and leads to practical obedience expressed in good works including tender thoughtful care for those in need and distress. He is the divine Teacher and the Truth, the Way and the Life who teaches all who seek his counsel, and people come to the Father through him. As truth he is also the true Light enlightening every person, with his words and example as the standard of self-denial and self-sacrifice showing followers how not to live for themselves, and his merits providing bestowed glory of character, while human standards are weak and the Lord's standard is perfection of character.
Christ the Life Giver
Christ is the foundation of all spiritual life, and natural life also comes through him in God. He gives life more abundantly so that his own life is in believers even if they die as he died, and by divine authority and power to lay down his life and take it up again he secures salvation and gives life and immortality to those dead in sin, offering the guilty peace and pardon. His offered life secures salvation and pardon for the guilty, and his words carry divine authority bringing people close to the living fountain. Coming to him means accepting his invitation to receive mercy and love.
In his humanity he reaches people, and in his divinity he reaches the throne of God. Though all the fullness of the Godhead dwelt in him, he veiled his glory in humanity so that he could reach people, and while clothed in human nature and firmly doing his Father's will he hated sin yet loved sinners, suffered in their place and joined them to himself. Because he became human and experienced suffering and temptation without sin, he understands afflictions and helps the tempted, and studying his life reveals what he is to humanity and to each person. The verse identifies him with the eternal I AM whose presence is not limited by time or place.
He is the Son of God who was Commander in the heavenly courts and the Word who was with God before the world was, come to open heavenly things to fallen humans. As the way, the truth, and the life he clothed divinity with humanity and possessed two natures, divine and human, and was thereby fully able to accomplish complete redemption and restoration to the privileges of the higher life. He began earthly life as human beings begin it, as a helpless babe, and lived the life every human receiving God's gift may live. In his humanity he is truth and light and life imaging the Father, representing the Father's power and glory with the divine signature upon words and works and doing only what he saw the Father do.
All of God's glory that humanity could bear was revealed in him, for had he come in full glory the race would have been consumed, so truth could only come through his humanity and in him the Father was imaged. He himself is the treasure of the gospel and heaven's greatest gift, who entrusted truth to the Hebrews as golden treasure and instituted the Jewish economy himself, veiling redemption in types and symbols pointing to him, then was personally among them as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Traditions handed down and human interpretation hid from them the truth as it is in him so the spiritual import was lost, though God does not conceal truth but men obscure it by their own course. His teaching called for decided change, giving up cherished maxims, selfish practices and preconceived opinions at the cost of conversion, so they would not admit the most conclusive evidence and rejected him though the Old Testament testified of his life and character.
His ministry was marked by humility and compassion, so that though going about as a poor man he fed the hungry multitude, and his works give evidence of his connection with the Father. His earthly life was marked by self-denial, comforting and encouraging all who came for relief as precious, bearing divine dignity while treating every family member with tender care, coming to stand at humanity's head and give believers power to become God's sons and daughters. Connection with him means doing one's best and then trusting him as Saviour and Redeemer, with true faith working through love and purifying the soul. He came in human form so people could approach and learn from him, and through him humanity may reach toward divinity and share the divine nature.
His coming calls sinners to repentance and invites the burdened to come, learn his meekness, and live in obedience to God's law. As Truth and Life he came close to humanity, taking humanity, speaking human language, sharing trials, poverty, meals and work, fully identifying with people and breaking down barriers his divine works and mysterious character could otherwise create. His titles as Truth and Life connect with his becoming human when the Word took flesh and lived among people in sympathy. He brings people to the Father and gives everlasting life by the life he lived and gave, for though the only begotten Son he hid divinity under humanity and came as Redeemer to pay sin's penalty.
While veiled he remained the Mighty Counsellor and Prince of peace, with a life filled with sympathy, love, goodness, kindness, benevolence, meekness and lowliness. That character is the science of everlasting life, and becoming more like him every day and carrying that science into all efforts through constant well-doing revealing his attributes is the path he opened. In human life he lived out God's law and revealed the Father's character, making God known, joining humanity with God as the way of escape and sole refuge for the guilty. He is the channel through whom the Father's mercy reaches people and their prayers rise to him, and he came as Jehovah's Messenger whose life culminating in sacrifice made God known with blessings and the Father's glory shining through him.
He revealed the Father in teachings reflecting heaven's wisdom and in works showing divine power, and knowing him is knowing the Father. He embodies perfect obedience to God's eternal Word and, though tempted as humanity is, passed the test Adam and Eve failed. Through his death he vindicated his right to pardon sin, and the repentant thief's faith showed he can save completely those who receive him. He himself is the standard, rule, and aim for life and character, having pointed out the path and leading in it so no more pleasant path can be found.
True religion is being under his guidance and like him in thoughts, words, deeds and fruits of righteousness, each person seeking to attain that standard himself. He is the complete and perfect example of the character required for heaven, to be followed by parents in giving righteousness to and training their children. He is the only source of hope and help for fallen humanity, and true excellence of character is not found apart from God. He has been the only way of salvation since the first gospel promise in Eden, through whom Adam, Abel, patriarchs, prophets and the church are saved, with Abel's slain lamb representing the Redeemer's blood and no access by another way.
He was the Way for the antediluvian church, the patriarchs, the prophets and the Christian church, the same personal Saviour with the same standard of righteousness in Old and New Testaments. He was not newly introduced, but from Adam was upheld as the way, truth and life, with Enoch walking with God, taken without dying and prophesying the second coming, and Noah, Abraham and Moses as representatives by persevering righteousness, faithfulness, and self-sacrificing meekness. The gospel was revealed to earlier ages through types, histories and prophecies testifying of his sufferings and following glory, and his first advent revealed this way in sacrifice of riches, power and glory for poverty, temptation, privation and suffering. Fallen people can reach God only through him as Redeemer and refuge for safety from wrath and death deserved by sin, receiving life by faith, since direct communication was no longer possible after the fall and he alone provides access and is the means of God's communication to humanity.
His love reaches down to the depths of earthly misery to meet the veriest sinner and reaches up to the eternal throne to lift man from degradation, meet necessities, satisfy desires, bring God's love down and bring man up through his merits to reconciliation. Following him is hard, step-by-step painful slow work onward and upward in purity and holiness, but he has made ample provision to impart new vigor and divine strength at every advance step. In him as the only way to the Father and source of truth and life the Christian finds peace, strength and security amid opposition, with rest for the weary and water of life for the thirsty. Coming to him in trust lets him carry life's burdens and replace fear, sorrow and care with peace and rest through humble self-denying obedience rather than earthly treasure, and peace and joy are found only in his service.
The fullness of the verse is seen in him as source of the abundant life believers must have, which God breathes into those who die to self and live to him, requiring entire self-renunciation. Living faith finds sufficiency in him who is all in all, requiring daily growth in understanding through self-sacrifice and living by faith, asking in faith without doubting for power and wisdom, with every thirsty soul invited to come drink from life's fountain. Fallen man must daily derive vitalizing power from him, for apart from him everything is worthless, and his truth brought into the soul is the grand remedy for all physical, mental and spiritual disorders. Whatever the Word says is to be taken home and partaken as the bread of heaven, as the flesh and blood of the Son of God, giving evidence in family government, customs, practices and order.
He is the fountain and source of all refreshing and invigorating influence, and reflecting his example depends on his grace and on drawing strength through prayer. He is the source of unsearchable inexhaustible eternal riches, through whom God provides what is needed for a life shaped by his character and brings that work to completion. He is the light, the truth and the way and the all in all, from whom comes every holy thought, pure desire and godlike purpose, living in his representatives by the Spirit of truth, so that if he is not abiding in the soul another spirit rules. He is the only way to the Father and light of the world, and the life he gives runs parallel with Jehovah's life and endures into the courts above.
Eternal interests hang on each person's choice toward him, with immortal crown for the overcomer and ruin for neglecters, and knowledge of him and man's eternal destiny, revealed from eternity expressing God's mind and glory, is the true science of godliness and education. As life and truth and the way, knowing him in practice means being united to him and receiving life and nourishment from him. Whatever benefits fallen people receives its life-giving power from him, and apart from him religious activity is worthless. He is the source of life and salvation, and a practice drawing people to a human controller rather than to him separates them from true strength and does not lead to life.
Sinners come to God through him alone, not through another person or mind, for he is the Mighty Healer whose grace and life are the only safe influence on the mind, to whom others are to be directed for healing, faith, hope and courage. He as Way, Truth and Life must be seen by precious souls in Greater New York, both those who have not bowed to Baal and those who have ignorantly worshiped Baal when light shines on them. Making him known requires humble work in gospel simplicity after his order, in humility never rising above the simplicity of the gospel, pointing souls to the Saviour and presenting truth in love, not by display or theatrical performance.
He is not merely one who preserves life but is life itself and the source of all vitality, who gives life, has defeated death through death and resurrection, and grants eternal life, while human agents can only try to prolong life. Therefore physicians should direct patients away from dependence on themselves toward Jesus grasped by faith, as Physician of soul and body, whose light illuminates the mind. At the bedside of the dying the physician is to point to him who willingly receives all who come in faith, with repentance and faith bringing saving help even for those turning to him at life's end. He is life itself, the divine Physician to whom souls belong and who can accomplish what human beings cannot attempt.
Those who try to prolong life, especially physicians holding life in their hands with the sick in body and mind, must live a daily Christian life, remain under his control, look to him to direct every movement and trust him at their side, and he will inspire confidence, make them a blessing, and give tact in difficult cases. As the Life he passed through death and broke the fetters of the tomb and consecrated the grave by his presence, while the footsteps of his cross-bearing life remain traceable and testify to his character and mark the path to follow. Salvation and the way to a higher life are found through him as guide and present help in every time of need.
Believers must sincerely cling to and follow him as the Fountain of life, living Saviour and Intercessor who helps in trials and temptations, with clinging meaning following sincerely and trusting through trials. Eternal life is given by the Father to those who believe in and accept him, and refusing to come to him is refusing life. He calls people to come for life and rest, and through his merits repentant sinners who choose obedience may have hope, with salvation including overcoming as he overcame by uniting with him in unwavering faith and developing Christian character.
Eternal life is found through him alone, for he is the only way to the Father and to eternal life, the light of the world through whom access comes. He is the sin-pardoning Saviour who takes away guilt, gives pardon, a new heart and the light of life, and gives the excellency of knowing him as more valuable than the world, a pearl worth loss of all to win because he and his righteousness become everything. As shown when he arrested Saul on the Damascus road, he reveals himself even to those not seeking him, blinding eyesight while enlightening understanding to know God, bringing remorse for persecuting him, and becoming more than the world.
His name while clothed in humanity and firmly doing his Father's will has power to save, dispel darkness, give light, bring cheer in darkest times and give peace with God. His children see him, turn to him for help and receive it, do not conform to the world, and he enlightens their minds, purifies their hearts and enables them to discern his love and beauty, so unlike those focused on worldly gain they are not left lonely or comfortless. He is the light enlightening every person who has given precious truths to be known and practiced, and love for him and truth unites believers and leads them to obey God's commandments. He gave himself for the fallen world, and all treasures of wisdom and knowledge are found in him.
From childhood he was the true light shining amid moral darkness and the guide of men, and his grasp of truth and power to resist temptation grew in proportion to conformity to the word he himself had given holy men to write, through communion with God and complete surrender apart from false education and traditions. He is to be revealed in simplicity of truth and humility, never rising above gospel simplicity, as greatest medical missionary and tabernacle of witness. As truth he spoke only pure refining ennobling truth, words of heavenly wisdom making wise unto salvation and serving as spiritual strength when made part of daily life, and as life he came to give life with privilege to receive the bread of life, manifesting God's love, cheering the downcast, bending all to present and future happiness, teaching by example the life fitting for bliss and bringing healing to soul and body.
Completeness is found in him as the Truth and the Life, requiring followers to walk before God with hope and humility relying on his truth and life rather than self. He is the way to the Father and source of truth and life, and as personal Saviour he is the believer's strength and victory, so that while people work with God, new life and power to do good come through him. He is to guide and counsel people in plans and councils, and self-love and self-indulgence extinguish his love in the heart so self should have less importance. He is the sinner's only refuge, and those truly convicted stop praising the minister, exalt him above any human instrument, and experience conversion to himself rather than to a preacher.
He is the only way to the Father and source of eternal life, the Light and Truth in whom hope of eternal life is centered, and in compassion he draws toward heaven all willing to be drawn. He is the way to the Father and source of truth and life, and as personal Saviour he is the believer's strength. Those separated from heaven are prisoners of hope placed on probation, and he bridged the otherwise impassable gulf through his own body, reuniting what sin divided, giving help and strength to everyone who desires to cross and to everyone who believes.
Sole Access to Father
To know and see Christ is to know and see the Father, for Christ reveals the Father and his character and shows the way to him, having come as the Sent One as the express image with the fullness of the Godhead dwelling bodily, with Christ in the Father and the Father in him so that his words are not of himself and the indwelling Father does the works. Knowing him makes the Father known because his words and works reveal the Father, and acquaintance with him gives a more perfect knowledge of God. In his human life he lived out God's law and revealed the Father's character, making God known, and he revealed the Father in teachings reflecting heaven's wisdom and in works showing divine power, coming in human form so people could approach and learn from him and reach toward divinity.
Christ is the way to the Father as a real, personal God who must be kept in view, and losing sight of him leaves the way open to Satan's delusion, so believers must guard against spiritualistic science and mysticism that defines God away and must refuse conjecture about his character. He opened the way of salvation by giving his life as a sacrifice on Calvary, suffering in the place of sinners and saving all who receive and believe, through whom people receive the Father's provided salvation and acceptance through atoning blood, so even the sinful and guilty may come. His offered life secures salvation and pardon for the guilty, his words carry divine authority bringing people close to the living fountain, and his death paid the infinite price for eternal life.
He opened access to God by his sacrifice at Calvary, so sinners may come for cleansing and acceptance, no one is forced but all are called, guilt need not keep anyone away, and his atoning blood makes petitions welcome as he calls sinners to repentance. By his blood he consecrated a new and living way into the holiest of all, and he alone is the way to the Father through whom sinners have access to God, with no human rite able to provide atonement apart from what he made possible, for he is the way into the holy of holies with no screen separating the sinner from God. Access to the Father is possible only through him because the guilty cannot approach God in their sinful state.
The Jewish priesthood and sacrifices were symbols of his death and mediating work that could not save but pointed to him, and through his perfect sacrifice meeting the law's demands and mediation surpassing the earthly priesthood, separation by sin is overcome and the symbolic system ended when he as the real offering took its place. People can come into God's presence only through the promised Redeemer whom the sacrificial offerings typified. Adam and Eve's sin caused fearful separation between God and man, and Christ steps between as the one mediator reconciling God to man and man to God, now standing as great High Priest pleading man's behalf so man can come presenting his case through him.
Though man sins his case is not hopeless with Christ as righteous advocate, and there is no other exaltation except through him. People come to the Father through his mediatorial work, whose mission was not to establish a worldly kingdom but to bring people to the Father and establish a reign of peace and love. People come to the Father only through his mediatorial work as Mediator; the Father is not seen directly in glory but through the Son people see and hear the Father, and the heart must be taught by God's Spirit to recognize its need and come to Christ.
Christ is the channel through whom the Father's mercy reaches people and their prayers rise to God. Believing in God as gracious Father must be joined with believing in Jesus as Mediator, the only access who presents petitions, intercedes, bestows blessings, and unlocks heaven's storehouse, so believers hold fast faith and come boldly to the throne of grace. Access to the Father comes through Christ when people come as needy and sinful, renouncing own goodness and works and relying on the sacrifice of the crucified and risen Saviour, and he accepts their prayers, presents them to the Father with his merits and character, and pleads for them.
He intercedes for his people as a conquering claimant of victory's trophies rather than as one persuading the Father to compassion, able to save completely all who come to God through him. He answers requests made in his name and gives the Holy Spirit to his followers. God in mercy placed the salvation of all believers in his hands with Christ engaged as Sacrifice, Substitute and Surety, and God is revealed in Christ in whom hopes of eternal life center as substance and power of believers, with true belief meaning doing his Word even at cost of forsaking family and life itself and lifting the cross.
Only through the Son of God can anyone come to the Father, and Christ alone can remedy the injury humanity suffered through the fall. There is no other approach to the Father, so human beings must not subordinate the eternal to the temporal but must use every power to glorify the Redeemer and cooperate in saving the world, with coming by Christ meaning refusing divided service and seeking first God's kingdom. Access to the Father is through Christ alone; reputation, virtue, piety, wealth, talents or church standing cannot unite the soul to him, but only believing in him and relying wholly on his saving grace, without which there is no true communion or ground for peace.
Salvation and heaven come only through Christ and his atoning death, not by human good works, doings, deservings, efforts, or merit. People are justified freely by grace through faith by imputation of Christ's righteousness as God's gift, and Christ is the way into the city of God. Apart from Christ people have no merit, righteousness or power to do good, and must be found in him clothed in his spotless righteousness, coming with humble heart for forgiveness, putting the hand in God's hand for help to believe and claiming the promise in the only saving name, to whom Christ gives himself and will not cast out the repenting sinner.
Learning him means relying on him for salvation rather than on personal righteousness or any price a person could offer, receiving him as Saviour through faith in his merits with a heart that recognizes its inability and clings to him alone. He is the only way to the Father and the sinner's only hope, and a person must come to him in repentance and rely on the merits of his blood, not personal goodness, morality, sincerity, or human opinion, for acceptance. Sinners must come to him for pardon and grace trusting him as personal Saviour, for Christ alone can make people pure and keep them pure, holy and obedient, with receiving grace calling for living faith that works by love and purifies the soul.
The guilty find refuge and access to God through Christ alone, not through the law which reveals sin but cannot pardon. He is truth and life because in his human life he fulfilled God's law and revealed the Father's character, joining humanity and divinity and making God known. He is a refuge from God's just wrath, so that though people deserve death they may be safe through faith and have life offered amid death. He is the refuge in whom people must hide rather than trust lies to escape wrath, the way to safety and life, with those sanctified through truth hidden with Christ until desolation passes.
He is the way sinners must find as their refuge, needing instruction in the plan of salvation including repentance and faith to come to him. Salvation comes only through Christ by accepting him as personal Savior uplifting those sunk in degradation, while any theory seeking salvation elsewhere or rejecting his atonement and the Holy Spirit's work is powerless. He is the true and living way to God and the sinner's only hope: a person may come just as they are, sinful and unholy, and receive forgiveness, access does not depend on painful pilgrimages or holy shrines, and the verse offers assurance to the sin-stricken soul seeking pardon.
The sinner who looks away from self sees Jesus personally as the way, truth and life, and when fearing sins too grievous to forgive, seeing him as the Lamb who takes away sin and as crucified for sinners and interceding upon the cross dying to make pardon possible brings victory as the Sun of Righteousness shines into the heart and redeeming love flows into the thirsty soul, giving the bread of life, opening the heart to receive truth and bringing faith, repentance and transformed life, so that presenting Christ crucified with love breaks hearts where mere argument does little good. Sinners come to the Father through Jesus, and looking to Jesus who died on the cross to make pardon possible and bears away sin brings salvation, with the light of his righteousness and tide of redeeming love renewing the heart.
He is the repenting sinner's intercessor found by turning from self to him dying on the cross as sacrifice and laying hold by faith on his merits. Seeing him as Way, Truth and Life makes faith work by love, makes the sinner hate sin, brings transforming grace stamping the divine image, fills the heart with gratitude, makes willing to suffer, breaks the heart, and brings Jesus to possess the soul. He is discerned through his suffering and death as the Lamb slain and atoning Intercessor, his resurrection, continuing advocacy and promised return. Christ crucified is God's power, wisdom and way of saving sinners, with the light of the cross making salvation understandable even to children and winning hearts to love him.
He is the way to eternal life and the means of coming to the Father, the world's light given as the anointed One to atone for the sins of the world. Believing in this atonement and recognizing that people are bought by the blood of God's only begotten Son are essential, and rejecting it leaves a person vulnerable to Satan and at risk of losing eternal life. He is the way to heaven as the sacrifice whose price secures heaven, faith in him is the way there, and he calls people first to believe in him and then to work in and through him. He came from heaven in human form to reveal the way, and access to heaven is through faith in him, with belief in the Son coming first and leading to doing God's works.
He is the way to the Father whose life reveals the Father's character. He brings people to God by delivering the oppressed soul from sin's bondage and changing sadness to joy when the soul surrenders by faith. As the way to the Father his love and sacrifice open the gates of Paradise, and seeing redemption as an act of love binds life to him and awakens wholehearted desire to serve him. As the way to the Father those who receive him are beloved by God as his only begotten Son is beloved, for he is the sin-bearer who rescues from sin and through his merits they may be presented perfect.
The verse is reflected in the invitation to come to him and live and to return to the heavenly Father. Those who accept his invitation receive his assurance of rest to those burdened by sin, and accepting it means submitting the will to God and joining in saving souls. He draws all people to himself, and those who respond are convicted by truth, repent, are converted, become children surrendering in obedience, find rest and peace, and as pardoned souls take him as complete pattern. He seeks to make his voice heard, but people who refuse to hear and believe cannot find peace and rest or receive the Spirit of truth.
Coming to the Father through Christ means making room for him by entire surrender of will, cleansing the soul from defilement and removing passions and worldly ambitions, bringing perfect peace with God and the duty to show truth's transforming power in life. Because human lives belong to God and have been purchased by the Son's blood, safety lies in accepting his provided redemption by making Christ the way, the truth, and the life. He is the way to God, source of redemption and Pearl of great price proclaimed by his gospel, with the eternal Son appointed as ransom for a fallen world. Only through faith in his name can the sinner be saved.
As head of the new creation and prophet, priest and king of regenerate humanity, he is Emmanuel, the eternal Word become flesh from whose fullness all receive, so only through faith in his name can the sinner be saved. As head of the new creation and prophet, priest and king, sinners are saved only through faith in his name as the only way to the Father and source of truth and life, leading those renewed by God. He is the only way to the Father, the Redeemer and foundation of faith, and must be received as a personal Saviour and formed within believers as the hope of glory. He is the truth and the only way to the Father, and when the heart is open to truth and receives him it receives the Father, while rejecting him as the crowd did in demanding crucifixion rejects the truth.
He is the only way of salvation and the only way to the Father, with clear evidence that he is the Messiah as a light leading out of error, so rejecting him brings ruin and destroys hope of everlasting life. To despise and turn away from him is to turn away from life, and to dwell wholly upon him while turning from the Father and his law is a blinding work to separate Father and Son. There is only one way for any person of any character to gain eternal life, which is to unite with Jesus in faith and perfect obedience, for whom Christ died to give life and whom God sees with compassion as purchased possession. Those learning by experience that Jesus alone brings people to the Father become laborers together with God teaching others to unite with him.
He is the only way to the Father and the only hope of eternal life, so ministers are to lift up and exalt him as the Man of Calvary as the world's only hope, with belief in his divinity as part of the message. He is the only way to the Father and the kingdom of heaven, the truth and the life, and his firsthand experience of humanity's conflict makes him fit to judge, with all judgment committed to him and through his mediation every tempted person may find refuge. Salvation is not found through humanly devised religious means, penances, priestly absolution, or human merit, and without spiritual light people see no way and have no hope.
The verse is of great consequence because God's promises are yes and amen in Christ as the only Saviour, calling for practical daily faith that trusts Christ alone, without which it is impossible to please God. He is the assurance of every promise and of deliverance from sin, enabling people by divine power to obey God's law. The verse gives assurance to helpless, discouraged people who come to Christ trusting him rather than relying on themselves for acceptance, forgiveness and help, bringing hope and comfort. Faith in him working through love leads people to seek his help and those who ask receive, with coming meaning bringing burdens, learning his meekness, and humbling oneself so the Saviour can lift one up.
He is the only way by which people can keep God's law, made possible through the victories he achieved in his death on Calvary, with no other way. Eternal life is gained only through Christ, with the sinner coming in humility recognizing him as the propitiation and seeking forgiveness, and obedience to God's word as the condition of entrance. He is the only way to the Father and source of eternal life, the propitiation for sin; recognizing this leads to humility, repentance, confession and plea for forgiveness, and obedience to God's Word is the condition of entrance into God's kingdom.
He is the Redeemer who makes God's light known and manifests the way, and receiving his saving work requires drawing near to God and believing that he saves now, whatever the past. He himself is the only road to the Father, full truth, and source of life, and coming to him requires deep practiced understanding of Scripture rather than superficial reading, distinguishing wise virgins with oil from foolish virgins with profession only. As the Way, the Truth, and the Life he was seen and known by disciples while the world will not listen, accept him as guide, or discern spiritual things. As the Spirit of truth his abiding presence remains through the Holy Spirit given forever as pleader and guide constantly teaching, reminding, testifying and convincing of sin, giving experimental knowledge of God so disciples comprehend Christ's love passing knowledge.
Though he ascended and in his humanity could not be everywhere present, he sent the Holy Spirit to represent him on earth. He is the connecting link between God and fallen humanity, representing the Father and serving as mankind's great teacher. He himself is the way, the truth and the life to the Father declared to the world amid moral darkness by a life in which he abides in the heart and the believer abides in him, so that those who live with eye single to God's glory unconsciously leave a bright track heavenward, revealing the graces of the Spirit, having his righteousness as their own. As the way to life, teaching people the way of life means leading them to him through the message of truth. He is the way of salvation and eternal life who teaches how to know the Lord, and his life reveals this way since he came humbly, endured temptation and suffering, and overcame.
He is the way to salvation, the truth revealing God's purposes, and the source of life, with knowledge of salvation coming only through God's Word as necessary for eternal life. Neglecting salvation brings eternal ruin while the overcomer receives an immortal crown, and the message of deliverance is offered to all. He himself is the path to holiness, peace and rest, and coming to the Father through him is nigh, simple and plainly revealed, not afar off or intricate.
Saviour Through All Ages
He has been the Way, the Truth, and the Life in every age and not a newly revealed way, for he originated and founded the Jewish religious system and guided Israel in the wilderness in the pillar of cloud. The Jewish ceremonies and symbols pointed to him and revealed the everlasting Gospel, and the New Testament unfolds the Old Testament rather than replacing it with a different Gospel, so the accumulated light of Scripture is to be shared with the church and proclaimed throughout the world. He was the way of salvation in every age through whom patriarchs and prophets were saved, guiding Israel in the pillar of cloud as he gave directions to Moses. The Scriptures record the devotion and failures of faithful people to teach wisdom for salvation and to guide people to follow their virtues, and the old way contained enough light to lead every soul to eternal life, so treating the patriarchal and prophetic age as Christless or scorning that way is contempt for him.
He is the way to God and the truth and life for Old Testament times just as much as for New Testament times, being the Truth and the Alpha of Old Testament history whose treasures the New Testament makes clear and important. The Old Testament is not dim moonlight beside New Testament sunlight, for his going forth is prepared as the morning, and his instruction to Israel from Mount Sinai carries the same powerful light as his teachings in person on earth as the Son of God. As he was the courage, teacher, and leader of Israel in the deliverance from Egypt under the cloud by day and fire by night, so he is the same to his people today.
From the days of Adam he was upheld as the way to God, the truth, and the life, with the first gospel promise in Eden pointing to him. Abel's lamb sacrifice represented his blood, and Abel's obedience to God's commands opposed Cain's alternative way, so that though murdered his faithful witness continued to speak. Enoch walked with God, was taken to heaven without dying, and prophesied his second coming, while Noah's persevering righteousness and faith, Abraham's faithfulness, and Moses' self-sacrificing meekness and humility made them representatives of God's way. The promise of a future life and a place with God is reached through him, and his truth applies to believers in every age.
All Jewish ceremonies and typical services find their fulfillment in him, for he takes the place of the temple and the church's offices center in him, so access to God is no longer through ritual forms or outward display but through him who calls people directly to himself and provides a spiritual priesthood. True religion at the heart of this truth and life is worship in spirit and truth rather than outward ceremony or display. He is the Truth because he is the reality to which the ancient types pointed and the fulfillment of ancient prophecies. The gospel taught all the way through the Bible from Genesis to Revelation reveals him as the coming Saviour in all the prophecies of his first advent, and knowledge of God's Word that transforms the mind becomes part of life and is imperishable, so the more fully it is devoted to God the more deeply people value him, while worldly knowledge without knowledge of the true God and him is ignorance and will perish.
He is the steppingstone by which fallen humanity is exalted to God and the only hope and way to life, with every act in the old dispensation to turn men away from sin and bring them forgiveness done with reference to him as the coming Saviour. He died because not a precept of his Father's law could be altered to excuse fallen humanity, so coming to the Father through him does not honor God by despising the Father or his law. To despise and turn away from him is to turn away from life, but to dwell wholly upon him while turning from the Father and from his law is a blinding work to separate the Father and the Son. He alone has power to give life, and receiving him does not mean rejecting the Father or his law.
Simeon recognized the infant Jesus as this Way, though nothing in his outward appearance gave that assurance, for spiritual discernment enabled him to see him as the Messiah and God's gift of redemption. That saving hope was for Gentiles as well as Jews, and his redemption was intended for all people. God sent him to the Jewish people as Jehovah's Messenger to reveal the Father, and his life culminating in his sacrifice made God known to humanity. His path brought blessings with the light of the Father's glory shining through him, yet they failed to understand it because they rejected the light.
He was personally among them as the Way, the Truth, and the Life and as the treasure of the gospel and heaven's greatest gift, having entrusted truth to the Hebrew people and instituted the Jewish economy himself, veiling the great truths of redemption in types and symbols that all pointed to him. The Jews had the word of God in their hands with abundant evidence from his miracles, teaching, and the Old Testament Scriptures testifying of his life and character that he was the Messiah, yet traditions handed down from generation to generation and human interpretation hid from them the truth as it is in him, so the spiritual import was lost and the treasure-house of all knowledge stood open but unknown. God does not conceal truth from men but men make it obscure to themselves by their own course, and his teaching called for a decided change of life, giving up cherished maxims and traditions, selfish ungodly practices, preconceived opinions and distorted religious theories, which required the sacrifice of conversion. Therefore they would not admit the most conclusive evidence, were afraid of being convinced, professed to believe the Scriptures while refusing their testimony about him, and rejected heaven's greatest Gift. Eternal truth calls for decisive change, and his truth is worth receiving even when doing so involves a cross.
Many who witnessed his works and heard his wisdom failed to recognize him as the Truth because expectation of an earthly glorious Messiah blinded them to the humble Teacher of Galilee whose coming fulfilled the prophets' predictions. His humble appearance concealed no lack of divine majesty, for his gentle authority healed the sick, raised the dead, brought joy to the sorrowing, and gave rest to the weary. Jesus of Nazareth is the Messiah and the evidence for him is clear, so those who receive the light he offers need not remain in the darkness of error.
He came to the world to bring people to God, and Satan opposed him with every agency and power of darkness to keep men from accepting him. Satan moved the Jewish leaders and through them turned the people away from the Son of God, making them satisfied with a religion of forms and ceremonies without true spirituality and sincere worship, while they were separated from God by wicked works. He is the restorer and Satan is the destroyer, so his coming brought stern conflict with the kingdom of darkness because he came to take the captives out of the hand of the destroyer, and all who believe in him receive eternal life.
Jerusalem rejected Jesus its Saviour and therefore rejected the only way to the Father, even as he loved the city and wept over it. Though Jerusalem refused to receive him, he regarded its people with pitying tenderness and sorrow so deep it broke his heart, because every soul was precious in his eyes and in all men he saw fallen souls it was his mission to save. His truth was always spoken in love, and his life revealed the Father's character and displayed divine compassion for every person.
As the Light of the world and the Way, the Truth, and the Life, though innocent and charged with no crime with no charge proved against him, he was rejected and given over to a shameful death by the rulers. Those who should have pointed people to him instead led them to reject him, and the Jewish nation as the only one with power to save rejected him as the Light, the Way, and the Truth and refused to come to him for life. Yet people with hardened hearts cannot see it and accept him, and his agonizing prayer was not for his own sake but from sorrow over that hardness of heart toward him. Continuing in unbelief against him leads into the darkest unbelief, placing souls where God has no reserve power left to reach them.
Scripture Light and Knowledge
Jesus is the source of the light that fills the truly converted soul, shining as the Sun of Righteousness to act upon hearts, lighten the pathway, and dispel darkness. Those who receive that light must sink self wholly out of sight in Christ instead of exalting self, lift Jesus up, let their light shine before men in good works that glorify the Father in heaven, and make the great truths connected with salvation the theme of meditation day and night. By precept and example they are to hold forth the word of life and bring souls to the knowledge of the truth. As people follow on to know the Lord they recognize Christ as the Light guiding them, and the path He directs shines more and more toward the perfect day. Following Him brings the light of life rather than darkness, so those who follow do not walk in darkness but walk in the light as He walks in the light.
He is the Sun of Righteousness and the light that rescues people from darkness, and those who receive Him are called out of darkness into His light. His disciples are to represent Him to the world without surrendering vital truth. The light of truth enables people in the cities who have walked in error through ignorance and worshiped falsely without knowing it to see Christ. His words to the disciples provide the instruction essential for salvation, for He is the only way to the Father and knowing Him reveals the Father. He came as Teacher and True Light to expose error, make the path to heaven clear, reveal clear saving knowledge of God, shine amid moral darkness, save perishing souls, and teach what people need to know to find the path to heaven, and those who receive and obey His word are given power to become children of God.
He came as a Teacher sent from God to present pure truth from heaven amid moral and spiritual darkness, opening minds to understand what is essential for salvation and making the glory of God visible, and He gave His life to save the perishing. He directs people away from mere curiosity that cannot meet real needs and toward the life-giving knowledge they need that leads to God and gives eternal life. Knowing Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life is the essential and one truly valuable knowledge, and eternal life consists in knowing the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent, while speculative ideas and pursuit of novelty distract from it. Knowing the true God and Christ is essential to salvation, for worldly knowledge without it is ignorance that cannot save and will perish. Knowledge of God's Word transforms the mind, becomes part of life, endures as imperishable, and brings life, peace, and joy, and the more fully this knowledge is devoted to God the more deeply people value Jesus Christ.
The gospel is the knowledge of a personal Saviour, and the way to be saved is to believe in Christ as one's personal Saviour, since sin separated humanity from God and Christ alone bridged that gulf to bring people back to God. Knowing Him is essential to the terms of salvation on which human life depends. Personal experimental knowledge of Him is eternal life to the receiver, but merely claiming to believe the theory of truth fails without sanctification. Only by exemplifying pure and undefiled religion are souls won to Christ, and the eternal life received through knowing Him is kept only if the receiver holds the beginning of confidence firm unto the end. He is truth, the gospel is knowledge of the truth as it is in Jesus, and a saving knowledge of Jesus as a personal Saviour leads people into wider fields of truth. By faith in Him people obtain a correct knowledge of God and gain better acquaintance with Him as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and His work of mercy displays divine power testifying that His resources are in the only true and living God.
Scripture reveals Him, and understanding God's Word brings people into contact with God and Christ and gives practical and religious life greater effectiveness. The Scriptures were given to teach that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, come to give all opportunity to know God by clothing divinity with humanity so humanity can touch humanity and by faith lay hold on divinity. He plainly marks out the way to heaven and gives every needed help to form a character that can be taken into the future life, since man is utterly unable to find the way alone and must follow Christ as the light that lights every person, opening the heart to the Holy Spirit who guides into all truth and brings His truth with living power into the obedient heart as life. The Scriptures contain treasures needed in both present and eternal life, and God reveals their truths to those who serve Christ and keep looking to Him in faith, so understanding and receiving the Word makes it life and salvation throughout spiritual experience, and its teachings have eternal importance and must be practiced. The whole Bible reveals Christ, yet reading Scripture alone does not give saving gospel knowledge unless read with humble willingness to submit the will to God and sincerely seek and obey truth. Scripture must be read in its true setting, for pulling texts from context to support preconceived opinions distorts truth and can lead others to disregard God's law.
He is the Word of life whose words echo what God has said, and knowing Christ as revealed in the Word is the way to know what God is, which makes the Word full of comfort and large with promise. Though Himself the living Word, He points people to the written Scriptures and made the word of God the subject of His teaching and preaching. He met questioners with It is written and What saith the Scriptures and How readest thou, sowed the seed of the word at every opportunity when interest was awakened by friend or foe, directed hearers to the Scriptures as testifying of Him, and beginning at Moses and all the prophets opened in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself, in marked contrast to teachers who put traditions and human theories in place of the word. The Word of God is the guide to the way, the truth, and the life, and Christ is the life represented by the Word, which each person must personally receive through individual experience by repenting, believing, obeying, and surrendering to God, since no one can do this work for another. His parables lead from natural things to spiritual truth as links connecting people with God and earth with heaven, using humble familiar things to reveal eternal truth and teach disciples about God's work in nature.
His answers guide those who seek to know Him, clear away false interpretations, and show that kindness, sympathy, and love are necessary to fulfill God's law. Questions vital to salvation must be settled by His authority rather than human opinions or theories, so to know the way to heaven people must study the Bible and seek the Lord's word. Since He is the truth, trust and wisdom are to be sought in God rather than human beings or human authority, for God's thoughts are expressed through inspired writers and the Holy Spirit guides and teaches believers their duty. Studying the thoughts of God in Scripture means studying the philosophy of Him who is truth rather than human conjecture, and Scripture's truths received uplift mind and soul and strengthen against temptation. As light and truth He is the believer's righteousness and leads the way through difficulty, His wisdom not baffled by recurring problems and His presence giving courage to move forward in faith and prayer.
Truth comes from Him directly and without corruption, and when received inwardly into the heart it has great results, developing and showing itself in character. He alone can bring reformation of character, for merely reading God's Word or holding and repeating correct doctrines does not sanctify the soul; truth must be received inwardly and practiced so it shapes daily life and conduct toward others. The truth found in Him must be planted in the heart, not held only as theory, and when experienced through the Spirit it sanctifies and elevates the soul and guards God's workers against Satan's schemes. Truth is found in Christ and must be clearly taught so people can receive it, and He is also the bread of life whose reception strengthens people and brings hope, joy, and peace into their hearts. Those who follow Him recognize truth as distinct from error, receive it with gladness, and practice it through obedience to His Word, and truth received into the heart refreshes the soul and transforms the character.
He is the source of truth for those who sincerely seek to know it even at cost of self-denial and sacrifice, so they need not remain deceived by counterfeits, and His truth is made known to those who seek and are willing to do God's will. People are not condemned for lacking knowledge of the way, truth, and life as light they may know, but the truth and light they have understood condemn them when they neglect or refuse them instead of living by them, while those who never had light to reject are not condemned on that account. Amid confusing delusive doctrines the Holy Spirit guides and shields those who have not resisted evidences of truth, silencing and quieting every other voice but His so they can hear the True Shepherd and follow truth from Him. God gives every soul opportunity to hear and receive knowledge of God and the Saviour, and when the heart receives this truth as precious treasure Christ is formed within as the hope of glory. Minds must be continually guided by Him to understand rightly and speak exact truth, since preconceived opinions, bias, limited knowledge, and errors of judgment can prevent right understanding, so truthful speech depends on His guidance.
Seeing Him as the Way, the Truth, and the Life is necessary for freedom and sanctification, which professed Christians who have not seen Him lack. Yet those who have known this right way and truth can still forsake it, and knowledge does not make them faithful if they are not changed by it. Following Him leads out of darkness into eternal life, and doing God's will brings knowledge of His teaching. Trust is to be placed in Him, and the recorded mistakes of Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul, and other servants provide lessons for avoiding similar mistakes and relying on Him. God's Word gives cautions and instruction that point people to this way to the Father, and following it calls for watchfulness, repentance, and faithfulness to principle. The cross represents those who believe in Christ as sin-pardoning Saviour and accept His power to become children of God by repenting and ceasing to transgress God's law, and His truth cannot be separated from Bible teaching so no doctrine contradicting God's Word is acceptable. Truth is found in Jesus, and the truth about Him must be presented simply from Scripture and urged upon people in every city, including the Sabbath's binding obligation and the call to obedience.
Following in Obedient Discipleship
Following him means walking in perfect obedience in his lead and footsteps and doing his works, learning his ways and obeying God's will rather than one's own. As followers keep to that path they continually receive new strength heavenward, for truth shines on the way and life sustains those who walk it, the light of truth lighting each step as they grow in strength and grace. He gives strength to overcome what is unlike him and leads away from sin, self-indulgence and selfish inclinations. Walking in his way means submitting to his guidance and obeying his commands, and then his light shines on the path and he gives strength to continue. Through that obedience believers grow in strength and grace and become more Christlike, led by him as leader and present help from sin's low level to grace's heights. Following Christ as the way, the truth and the life means walking by the Spirit as he walked and doing God's will, living for God's glory through unselfish service to others. Following him means entering the narrow path and passing through the straight gate rather than the broad path of self-indulgence, accepting self-denial with no human device able to make the road smooth or easy. Climbing as on the ladder to heaven requires leaving behind every hindrance and keeping upward, denying self, taking up the cross and living in righteousness, with entrance into his everlasting kingdom through his grace and strength and obedience to God's law part of walking this way. The verse tests whether a person has followed him, for following means denying self, taking up the cross and choosing his way rather than yielding to corrupting desires. In the encounter with the rich young ruler his words and works embody that he himself is the way, the truth and the life, since the ruler must follow his example and obey his call to give to the poor and take up the cross if he would be complete, turning affection from earthly riches to heavenly treasure. Choosing him means choosing him as leader and following fully with ready mind and joyful heart. The choice is individual, each person believing and receiving the truth, valuing his reproach above earthly treasure, and he will be their portion forever. He is the only source of hope and courage amid weakness, perplexity, trials and weight of responsibility, the way, truth and life of constant dependence apart from whom everything fades into hopeless darkness. Following him faithfully means walking with him and cleaving to him and receiving his wisdom, and faith in him guides through darkness and difficulty toward divine light and strength amid the world's darkness. He is a present companion and present help in need, not a disagreeable companion. Cherishing unbelief, dwelling on disagreeable experiences and trials, and talking doubt treats him as disagreeable, dishonors God, withholds the richest manifestations of grace and the working of the Holy Spirit, and brings darkness. Revealing the power of the indwelling Saviour brings more of his power to be manifested. The verse calls for calm, unwavering trust in him while carrying out the duties God places before his people. His wisdom is not defeated or baffled by recurring difficulties and problems, and as his righteousness and presence as light and truth lead the way believers can move forward without fear in faith and prayer with courage. He is the divine way and guide, standing at the right hand of those inclined to careless, disorderly work, whose habits must be brought into harmony with his way and God's directions. Salvation comes through him alone by believing in his name as head of the new creation and prophet, priest and king of regenerate humanity, Emmanuel the eternal Word become flesh from whose fullness all receive, author and finisher of faith giving power to become sons of God. Following him as the way means humble practical obedience through trials, walking where he leads and trusting him as Saviour present at the right hand who guides and helps amid difficulties. He is the truth and the heavenly guide to follow rather than finite fallible human guides or one's own talents. He is the source of pure religion and heavenly grace, and yielding to him and practicing truth guides the life while following the Light of Life keeps from stumbling, and he alone gives the troubled heart assurance and peace. He is the light, truth and way who must guide and counsel his people. Union with God is through him and abiding life in the soul comes from union with him, and when he rather than self-interest presides over plans and counsels the truth triumphs. Those who surrender to him and welcome him into the heart are in safe keeping, and possessing him they possess truth and are complete in him. Presenting him rather than making controversy central helps people surrender and find that safe keeping. Those who follow him will be preserved when he comes and find safety in him while the earth is cleansed of iniquity. Those who unite with him and put him on work with him by living according to truth and conforming to true principles, becoming co-workers who display the power of truth to those in error and sin. As they behold him and look to him they become filled with truth and are changed, so bodies once given to idols become cleansed, refined, sanctified temples and dwelling places for the Holy Spirit. His truth purifies from moral defilement and forms his nature through the Spirit into righteousness and holiness expressed in good works and kind thoughtful love to the needy, distressed and suffering, which is practical obedience. People depend wholly on him and can do nothing without him, and their own ability and good works cannot save them. Yet no one can be saved without the good works his sanctifying power produces in the heart, and when he abides through the Holy Spirit conduct, attitude and words reveal him and the Spirit makes works acceptable to God, for faith without works is dead and unproductive. A living connection with him as the only way to the Father is shown by works, and those livingly connected bear fruits of godliness as the light of the world. Professed faith and knowledge of truth, human good works, doings and deservings are worthless for salvation or heaven if they do not lead to obedience and a life shaped by him, since salvation comes only through him whose death made atonement. Communion with God and true peace depend on union with him, for access to the Father is through him alone. Without that union a person cannot do anything God regards as useful or acceptable, and hope apart from him is delusive. Love for him is shown by keeping his commandments, which is the Bible test for those who have received light, and his teaching includes obedience expected of God's sons and daughters. Seeking salvation while refusing obedience is trying to reach the Father by another way and climbing up another way, for his way includes obedience to all God's commandments including the Sabbath, following his example of keeping his Father's commandments rather than choosing which to keep, not to earn heaven but as response of those who love him and have been saved. He reveals God's character and God's holiness seen in his law which he represented in giving it, and the surrounding words connect love with keeping his commandments and words and promise that Father and Son will love and dwell with the obedient. Christianity means believing in him and living by every word of God, with faith trusting and obeying by keeping his commandments and loving his law. Disobedience to even one command cannot be made safe or excused by false teaching or inherited practice, people are accountable to present light given in their own time, and following that light brings freedom in him as the way to believe, the truth to believe and the life in which to live. Outward obedience alone does not make a Christian, but the heart must be touched by God's Spirit and the person must have the mind of Christ. Those who truly accept him are covered with his righteousness, share his divine nature, have sins washed by his blood, and become branches of the living vine as the way to the Father and source of truth and life. Receiving and practicing his teachings leads to eternal life which he gives to those who believe, and genuine faith works by love and purifies the soul. His followers represent him by strict integrity and truthfulness in thought, word and deed with the aim of glorifying God. To be a Christian as expressed in Paul's words For me to live is Christ means he is the author, source and support of the believer's life, with the whole life centered in and bound up with him as the way, the truth and the life. Following him brings the light of life rather than darkness, and means denying self, walking humbly with God, and allowing the Holy Spirit to bring natural desires into harmony with his life. Through faith in his merits believers become partakers of his nature and overcome by his grace. His way is a path of sacrifice, yet following makes his people lights to the world and prepares them for eternal life and glory with him, leading away from sin, self-indulgence and selfish inclinations. The Scriptures testify of him and searching them reveals him, and through his death eternal life is made possible, so following means denying self, taking up the cross and seeking God. The way he opened as the world's only hope is through sacrifice of his life, and those who look to him are to walk in that way, keep God's law and live. His life shows the way through temptation and trial, for he came humbly, overcame temptation and endured suffering so people could know the Lord. His example calls followers to live in conformity to it in appreciation of his sacrifice, and following his lead lets people receive the benefits he brought as the way to salvation teaching how to know the Lord. He leads to heaven and reveals the truth and life illuminating the way there, having come to show fallen humanity God's goodness, mercy and love. Those entering eternal life must become like him, bear his image, share his mind, imitate his example and live as he lived a life of doing good, healing those oppressed and giving himself as ransom, which is the pattern for followers in self-denial and humility turning from selfishness and pride with truth received into cleansed hearts seeking purity and holiness. To know him is to know a life of pure disinterested benevolence in which he pleased not himself. All who know him must bear that self-denying example in mind and not please themselves, while carrying out his declaration that the gospel shall be preached for a witness to all nations. Beholding him and learning from him brings people nearer the Saviour, and his brightness reflected in words and life testifies to union with him so others recognize they have been with him. Beholding him changes followers into his image enabling them to shine amid darkness, and doubts and unbelief cannot overcome the light he gives as truth, life and way to the Father. He himself is the sanctifying truth whose truth enlightens the mind showing principles that should control life. His word studied and obeyed makes holy with the Holy Spirit as teacher and comforter, bringing healing like the leaves of the tree of life. Studying this way and his life and being a doer of his words means walking in safe paths. Following him makes a person a power for good. Sitting at his feet to learn means receiving his instruction and being drawn to surrender the will to his as the one from whom guidance is received. Allegiance brings willing obedience and desire to share the gift with others, drawing away from the world into willing obedience as his grace and character become evident. The words are for believers now, spoken in answer to Thomas who in unbelief and doubt said he did not know the destination or the way. When in perplexity go directly to the Word, read about his character and work, and do as he would do if in that place, for because he is truth itself he could not by word or practice testify to anything wrong. The lesson is to be believing Christians instead of doubters, believing God will do more than can be asked or thought, unlocking God's storehouse with the key of faith and showing his compassion in larger measure. He is the one sent from heaven to represent the Father with access through him, his words and miraculous works revealing the Father because the Father dwells in him and acts through him, and recognizing him in this way should overcome unbelief after he spoke of going to prepare mansions and coming again. Following him means seeking to know the Lord with fellow believers and serving in sympathy and unity, for a censorious divisive spirit builds barriers between people and him. He is the true voice to follow when many voices call into false paths, a sure guide and counselor in every condition and friend in loneliness, so standing close keeps from stubbornly choosing a personal way, pride must be humbled and discipline accepted, and listening stops contention over little differences and leads into unity and harmony. The verse expresses God's will to cure dissension when lived out practically, producing unity with one another and with him instead of weakness, as instruction in John 14 to be lived in practical life. Reaching heaven requires being one with him by following his example and works, learning his ways, obeying his will and seeking his guidance in prayer rather than acting independently. Those who believe travel the same path, and through unity with him become united with one another, for he has opened the way to the kingdom and no one is given a different path as the only way and source of truth and life. His followers see him as the way, the truth and the life and respond to God's love by walking in his way, giving themselves to God and doing his will. They proclaim him and his crucifixion and glory only in the cross. He as the only way to the Father, the truth and the light is the world's only hope, so believers are to unite closely with him, hide self in him and represent his character. Believers must stand in him as the way, and amid deception and spiritual darkness fixing the mind on him as Saviour keeps it on firm ground. He as truth is clearly revealed in the words, spirit and deportment of those who believe and learn of him. That revealing means freedom from egotism, bigotry, contempt, Pharisaism and self-righteousness, with tender sympathy, forbearance, love and courtesy toward those of other faiths whose souls are precious and purchased by his blood, recognizing true Christians outside one's fellowship who live by best light and never wounding them, laboring as broad-minded missionaries to win souls. Truth is made visible and attractive in a life like his, and those claiming to believe should reflect his character and show by conduct that they love and value him. As Light, Truth and Life he leads in straight paths, and salvation depends on following his leading. Through sanctifying truth people are changed step by step to become like him and are fitted for heaven. As Light, Truth and Way the work of salvation and character perfection is complete only in and through him. People must yoke themselves to him, trust and obey, and use the help God provides. Life is found in the way of obedience to God through him. Neglecting opportunity to know God and him leads to eternal loss, while obedience though difficult is the path of life. All have one Saviour to serve, honor and obey, and fixing the heart on worldly customs puts self between the soul and highest interests and violates the covenant, while a worldly form of service has no value and a meek quiet spirit is precious. Turning to him means turning from worldly entanglements and momentary pleasures and remaining faithful, pure and true to God, through whom is prospect of eternal life in heaven as the one way to the Father. Truth as it is in him is the safeguard against secularism and the force preserving faith and Christianity. It cannot be joined with commercialism that divides interests from sanctification. He is the one whose leading his people have followed, grounding defense of truth and adherence to established foundations, and the truth they hold was given as they followed his leading. Following requires standing in defense of that given truth against unscriptural theories and false representations of God, especially when error is made to appear as truth by pleasing use of Scripture, with him personally leading his followers. Those who ought to know him should not stumble along uncertain paths or lose faith in God's works and ways. He is always ready to help do right, and no one need make grave mistakes when turning to him for help as the way, truth and life. Those who remain steadfast to duty, walk in given light and stay close to God obtain power of grace to overcome infirmities and gain signal victories, and by those victories show those of weaker faith the way, the truth and the life. Those remaining at a distance are weakened, fail to obtain grace, fail to be steadfast and abounding in God's work, and fail to be strength and example in overcoming self, pride, vanity and love of worldly approval. He alone is the way to the Father and the sinner's only hope and source of truth and life, so those hearing his call must respond without delay, repent, forsake every sin and do works of righteousness. Merely agreeing to obey is not enough, and delaying or hardening the heart is unsafe because the invitation may not come again. Accepting him as the way, truth and life satisfies all hungering of the soul, for he is the Bread of life come to meet highest spiritual demands and his truth confronts the devil's lie. Accepting means denying self, lifting the cross and following wherever he leads, making spiritual things the aim rather than seeking temporal kingdom, advancement or pre-eminence. Only through him can anyone approach the Father and reach heaven, for he is God's commissioner sent to reconcile man, man's Prince and Saviour. Through him people are reconciled, return to loyalty and find rest, peace and security, and coming means believing and following, confessing and forsaking all sin, receiving him as personal Saviour and holding fast as the chief good, loving day by day, feeding on him, taking him as counselor and living by every word from God's mouth. His attributes are to be studied and sought so man may be complete in him and reveal his beauty, living as he lived with life hid in God and receiving daily fresh grace and power to impart. Perfection of character and lifting fallen humanity into holiness come only through him, and those believing are changed to reflect his character as the only means to purity, holiness and character needed for heaven with no other way to exalt the human family. Accepting him is not humiliation but the first step to true exaltation, joining finite people to the infinite God and fitting them for life with pure angels in glory. Through him as mediator and great High Priest pleading man's behalf man can come and present his case and find access, and taking hold as of a golden cord linking finite man to the infinite God fits man for heavenly society though man sins and his case would otherwise be hopeless. Those believing receive power to become God's children and are chosen out of the world, with his dwelling shown by lives shaped by his Spirit, love, meekness and obedience. They come out from the world and are not recognized by it as the world did not recognize him, their blameless lives show they are God's children, and united and abiding they live as examples bearing light with willing obedience leading into all truth as earthly life expressing pure religion. He as the way, truth and life must be made first and last and all in all in thoughts and practices. Receiving and obeying his teachings places one on his side on vantage ground where he gives healing and restoration, gives power to become sons of God to all who believe, and produces faith working by love and purifying the soul. He is the light of the world and life-giving power to be received in the heart by believing he means to save and trusting what God can do, and his light must be within before it can shine to the world. He is without sin to be put on and taken as loving Helper who saves, giving righteousness connected with life-giving power, with salvation by his merits not human merit or self-importance, as God works in the believer to will and do while the believer works out salvation with fear and trembling. Children are to be kindly and patiently instructed from the Scriptures in this truth from earliest babyhood, childhood and youth, with instruction of the only begotten Son ever kept before them in bringing them up in nurture and admonition. He is the one true Life whom the mother is to keep before her eyes, diligently studying his word and asking at every step what God has spoken, so character, training methods and daily experience in lowly care become true reflection of his life presenting highest ideal and developing divine likeness with God's help. The Sermon on the Mount presents God's law as the way of excellence, usefulness and happiness, and he alone qualifies people to lead others in the way of truth, happiness and obedience as the way, truth and life. He is the source of every valuable human gift including intellect, understanding, thoughts, opportunities and privileges, which people have nothing of in themselves and depend on him for. He is the leader whose words workers must obey and practice, and Christian success depends on cooperating with him and submitting to his will rather than following one's own way, receiving and practicing every word of God in faithful service. Eternal truth calls for decisive change, and his truth is worth receiving even when it involves a cross, for the way of life is clear in him. The Jews had abundant evidence he was the Messiah yet rejected heaven's greatest gift because receiving required giving up cherished traditions, selfish practices and preconceived opinions and refusing Scripture testimony about his life and character. As the truth, truth stands in elevated nobility with royalty, sacredness and divine sanction and must not be brought down to common things, regarded as fiction or left as speculation. God raises truth on high and places his signature upon it to rescue it from companionship with error, so teachers must never put forward human imaginations as truth, for imagination is chaff while truth is wheat.
Proclaiming Christ in Mission
John 14:6 gives the philosophy of genuine missionary work to be done by those acquainted with present truth, and it belongs to God's will plainly outlined in John 13-17 for those who minister in word and doctrine, requiring converted ministers to understand it and to believe every word in it as meaning just what it says and to live it out before fellow ministers. Gaining knowledge of Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life is central to the work of bringing people the gospel and bringing them to salvation and preparing them for God's kingdom and for God. Knowing him as the way, the truth, and the life gives responsibility to care about the salvation of those around, so that indifference and failure to use influence for others are failures to do the good that could have been done for God.
All people are to understand and follow him as the way to the Father, the truth, and the life, for the verse points to Christ as the way to everlasting life and invites people to come to him and learn that way for themselves. Those who give themselves to God cooperate with Christ in his work of drawing people to him and leading them to know the truth as it is in Jesus. Christ the world's Redeemer full of grace and truth is the source of the virtue and light that believers are to share with the world as salt and light, and through his power fallen people are raised and enabled to work in his ways.
People are to be led to Christ and through him to the Father, and this work of leading others to Christ depends on the Holy Spirit and calls for whole-hearted cooperation with God. He is the living voice calling people to follow him out of darkness, and his work is to save souls and bring light into moral darkness, so attention belongs on him and his saving work rather than on distracting side issues. Possessing Jesus means possessing truth and following him brings completeness in him, and presenting Christ rather than making controversy central helps people surrender to him and find safe keeping. Following him is the work that should hold the mind and direct the preaching of those who care for souls, rather than side issues that distract from Christ and him crucified.
Jesus Christ himself must be presented plainly as the only path to God, the embodiment of truth, and the source of spiritual life with power to save all who come to him. Presenting him means making plain the requirements of the law and the gospel in simple decided line-upon-line teaching that answers what sinners must do to be saved, convicts of sin, converts the soul, and leads into paths of truth and holiness to drink the water of salvation. This feeding of starving souls with the bread of life is the ministry that makes the Word effectual by the Holy Spirit, in contrast to lofty imaginative discourses that neither enlighten the darkened conscience nor convict nor convert. Ministers must lead sinners to Christ and turn attention away from themselves toward the Saviour. They are to present him and the truth as it is in him alongside the requirements of the law and the gospel and his life, death, resurrection, ascension, intercession, and promised return.
No man is to take his place or take praise or authority to himself, for John the Baptist came to bear witness of the Light declaring he was not that Light, ever pointing away from himself to Jesus as the Life, the Truth, and the Way and proclaiming him as the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world. The office work of every minister sent of God is the same, not to attract people to himself or turn sympathies and praise to finite man, but to direct every word of praise away from self, put self out of sight, and keep only Jesus the crucified One before the mind's eye. Knowing Christ as the way, the truth, and the life is essential to the work of caring for souls, and those who learn from him can work skillfully for people for whom he died, addressing health of body as well as health of soul and preparing people for the kingdom of God. His followers are to lead people to him through practical service addressing health of body and soul, and medical missionaries demonstrating his pitying love prepare people to hear the gospel and receive Bible truth. This knowledge belongs alongside concern for health of both body and soul.
Christian work and ministry must be centered on Jesus and built on the divine Christ, for without divine power joined to human effort the disciples could not accomplish the work appointed to them. The disciples distressed by his coming absence did not know where he was going or how to reach him, and through his suffering and death he saves everyone who receives and believes, while daily connection with him sustains his followers as they represent him. Staying close to him and receiving his grace enables fruitful service, while work without drawing from him leaves preaching dry and people unfed, and his presence within brings hope and breaks down barriers to reaching others. Those working in God's cause must have this knowledge and experience of Christ joining earth to heaven as the connecting link, whose love reaches down to the depths of earthly misery to meet the veriest sinner and reaches up to the throne to lift man from degradation, meet necessities, satisfy desires, and bring reconciliation, with ample provision of new vigor and divine strength at every painful slow step upward in purity and holiness, or they daily bring reproach upon him. Their authority and commission come from him as highest Master, not from any earthly master, and they are accountable to God for entrusted talents.
Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life is Master higher than men whom God's workers must acknowledge, holding their commission from God and accountable to him like Elijah and Jeremiah. In days of abounding temptation when some depart from the faith and try to quench thirst at broken cisterns that hold no water and proclaim a misleading smooth message, genuine gospel medical missionary work is to be done now by those acknowledging Christ as Master and no earthly master, speaking intelligently of the sacredness and importance of truth and pointing souls to God's standard of righteousness. Effective gospel work depends on a living knowledge of him and the heavenly endowment of the Spirit making hearts warm and words eloquent, since argument alone cannot overcome hard hearts, worldliness, and selfishness. That living knowledge, not logical argument alone, makes truth effectual to melt the hard heart and break through selfishness, and the disciples after three years of discipline under Christ as Teacher still needed to tarry in Jerusalem until endued with power from on high before preaching. The church's spiritual strength and effective testimony depend on the power of the Holy Spirit, which believers need to recognize their need for and receive.
Jesus is the true physician of souls and is with faithful physicians and nurses as they work with him, and when wise compassionate care leads a patient to give the soul to Christ and bring thoughts into obedience to God's will a great victory is gained. Medical missionaries are to follow Christ as Leader and imitate his example of unselfish service as the source of all light, heaven's blessings, and blessing. He is the example for medical missionary workers to follow by keeping his life of unselfish service in view and fixing eyes on him as the source of light and blessing. Christ as the Way, the Truth, and the Life was appointed by the Father to come as the great Medical Missionary and Life-giver not only to heal the sick but to take away sin and raise the dead. Those who trust him as Healer and commit themselves to his care and keeping receive relief from mental suffering, rest, and peace, and those receiving him as personal Saviour receive power to become God's children, so physicians must point the sick to him as the only one who can cure sin and give life with the gospel of spiritual as well as physical healing.
A physician joined to God's truth can present Christ as the way to God, the truth, and the life to others and speak to the afflicted with Scripture clearly in mind, recognizing the value of souls. By joining life and work to God's truth and depending on him, the physician receives direction and wisdom and can speak fittingly with understanding of each soul's worth and lead patients to the great Physician. Those training to care for the sick are to gain genuine knowledge of him and unite practical instruction with faith in him as the mighty Healer. Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life is to be set before everyone reached by health work, for giving the light on health reform requires constant educating in the sanitarium and out of it that leads all contacted to think of Jesus as they receive health-reform education and care on gospel principles.
Jesus who clothed divinity with humanity and came in likeness of men is the living fountain of life, the living manifestation of pure religion, and the one and only Way, Truth, and Life leading to the Father, whose earthly life expresses pure religion. Those who believe receive power to become sons and children of God, chosen out of the world and no longer of it, so the world does not know them because it did not know him. His Spirit and character are seen in them in heavenly conversation, meekness, and blameless conduct as branches united to the living vine walking after the Spirit not after the flesh, and as willing obedient followers led into all truth they become light-bearers whose words and actions convey truth. Those lacking personal piety or acting dictatorially, accusing and judging with unsanctified heart, drive people from God and weaken his work because they do not abide in Christ. He is also the Truth and the Light and the greatest worker who ever lived.
As the divine Author, the Truth, the Word, and the Life to whom the world must be drawn, the Spirit of God in him was brought into vital contact with the heart of the world to draw the world to him, and the plan of redemption meaning everything to a lost ruined world was to be proclaimed in him with his work tested and brought prominently forward, every moral and spiritual truth carrying power proportionate to its character and importance. As he is lifted up in prayer, exhortation, and praise, people are drawn to him and to the truth, redemption becomes a practical daily experience, and those who behold him show his love in words and conduct. He is the truth and guide whose life as the true light amid moral darkness, with communion with God and obedience to God's word, reveals truth and shows the way he leads, and he set himself apart for the disciples' sakes as the truth through which they are sanctified. He is the true path to the Father and source of life whom people in the valley of decision can find by coming to Jesus, and truth is to be presented as it is in him.
Leading people away from him is leading them away from the Truth, the Life, and the Light of the world, so believers are to exalt Jesus and depend on him for strength and grace. He is the way, the truth, and the light whom unbelievers need to behold and the means by which they can come to the Father. The light of truth must reach people in the cities, including those who have worshiped falsely without knowing it, so they can see Christ. He is himself the living Word yet points people to the written Scriptures, and those who found him as the true and living Way shared this truth with others while Scripture spoke with conviction to those longing for truth. He alone is the way to salvation and source of life, from whom come strength, wisdom, salvation, and daily grace leaders need to do work wisely and righteously and proclaim sacred truth. Those accepting his invitation to come receive his assurance of rest to those burdened by sin, which means submitting the will to God and joining in saving souls, and through his mediation as the only way to the Father and the kingdom every tried person may find protection. Every influence should be directed to exalting him as Truth, Life, and Light, for those learning meekness, purity, and lowliness and hanging helpless souls on him guide souls to him, while those failing to exalt him are false guide-boards leading souls away, the more pleasing and attractive their manners the greater the injury.
